AKG Y20U / Y20
| 8 mm Dynamic Driver |
🎧 We are reviewing the AKG Y20U / AKG Y20, the most affordable headphone from AKG. With the AKG Y20U, the brand is clearly aiming for the general public that is not searching for premium headphones no premium prices.
As you can see, we are referring to this model as AKG Y20U / AKG Y20, to avoid confusion we will explain their double naming. AKG Y20 is the baseline model with no microphone nor remote and AKG Y20U refers to the model that includes an inline mic/remote; besides this difference they are the same exact headphone.
The AKG Y20U features a single dynamic driver configuration with a diameter of 8 mm, a full response of 20-20000 Hz, 111dB of sensitivity and 38 ohms of input impedance.
The housings of the AKG Y20U have a peculiar form factor that Remax has copied with the Remax RM-502. Their finish has a rubberized coating, that AKG says to protect them from scratches and a very small footprint.

Accessories & Packaging
The AKG Y20U / Y20 unboxing results in 3 pair of eartips and a nice designed soft carrying pouch. Everything comes inside a transparent plastic packaging.
Bass & Sub Bass
The AKG Y20U / Y20 lower end has little sub-bass depth, mid-bass provides some punch but something sounds off in their bass response. They do not have a conservative sound but neither a fun style, a sort of anemic but bit-punch… very strange. Nonetheless, they provide some warmth and body to the sound signature.
Their loose seal and fit does not help to enhance their bass and show their true potential, the curve below show their true personality with a better seal, and you will see that beneath their anemic sound they are actually a mid-bass boosted earphone with strong punch.
Applying an EQ, there was no mid-bass improvement but much deeper sound – yet not very deep.

Mids & Vocals
The AKG Y20U / Y20 mids present no strong mid-bass bleed, clear but distant lower vocals and crisp higher mids, yet no harsh peaks show up.
With an EQ, male vocals sound less recessed but still somewhat laid back and distant, higher mids gain crispness.
Highs & Treble
The AKG Y20U / Y20 highs have good enough brightness for normal listening sessions and resolve a marginal amount of detail. Overall there is a darkish tint in their highs and no piercing peaks but sibilance is present and can get fairly strong at times.
An EQ opens up their highs and make them gain brightness but expect much stronger sibilance too.
The sound leaking out of the AKG Y20 is substantially less than on most average earphones. You will able to crank up the volume before their sound becomes hearable by nearby people.

Noise isolation is moderate with a performance slightly better than many average earphones. Isolation will be always partial unless you plan to dial up the volume knob all the way up.

Response to Equalization
The response to EQ of the AKG Y20U was passable, with barely any effect on mid-bass punch, a less recessed vocals profile but still distant sounding and brighter but more sibilant highs.
