ASUS ZenFone 2

? When discovering the ASUS ZenFone 2 earphones we felt excited about the possibility that they could be another earphone from an electronics/mobile devices company that can provide great value for money with very good sound quality such as what happened on our Elephone E1 review. We are hoping that at the conclusion of this review they result being something inline with the Elephone E1. Most probably you have heard of the ASUS brand as they are a gigantic manufacturer of electronic devices from computers to smartphones and wide array of electronics and gadgets but probably it is one of the first times that you hear/read that they also offer earphones, well actually they have a couple of models and the ASUS ZenFone 2 are one of them. The ASUS ZenFone 2 earphones are made of metal while remaining very lightweight the metal housings are able to add toughness to their overall build. Cable is rounded and rubberized to help against tangling issues. The cable holds a 3-button control and microphone, the control independently controls volume up, volume down and with the main button you can play/pause, skip tracks and answer calls. The 3-button controls are always very handy and add comfort and ease to the everyday usage of the earphones. You can buy the ASUS ZenFone 2 earphones in: red, golden, black or white.

A
Accessories & Packaging
After opening the large packaging of the ASUS ZenFone 2 you will find 2 extra pair of eartips and a nice carrying pouch.
7/10
B
Bass & Sub Bass
The Bass of the ASUS ZenFone 2 earphones is conservative with some mild mid-bass punch but fails to deliver sub-bass. There are no traces of mid-bass bleed and overall their lagging bass will fall short for many music genre’s bass requirements. Using an EQ, some extra mid-bass is gained but become a bit boomy and still they are unable to offer sub-bass depth. Under our extreme bass tests the ASUS Zenfone 2 earphones took up to 45% of a Fiio E12’s maximum power with distorted mid-bass and sub-bass and no enhancement of any bass frequency. This is one of the worst amplification performance that we have ever tested. Obviously no rumble or impact was achieved by them as they cannot even provide any acceptable level of punch or depth.

M
Mids & Vocals
Mids are mediumly recessed on lower mids but not excessively, lower vocals are a bit distant and lack some warmth. Higher mids are not as recessed and may get harsh at times. An EQ made them very harsh, boxy but less laid back in their lower section.
6/10
H
Highs & Treble
The highs of the ASUS ZenFone 2 earphones have some brightness and a mild degree of detail but they are not greatly clear, also they sound somewhat piercing and sibilant. With an EQ, highs become much clearer, brighter and detailed in comparison with a lot of improvement achieved, they remained equally sibilant while piercing highs got a bit enhanced.
6.75/10
SL
Sound Leak
The sound that leaks out of these ASUS earphones is substantially low. They are able to keep relatively private your listening session if moderate volume levels are used.
8.25/10
SI
Sound Isolation
The ASUS Zenfone 2 do a good job isolating noise from outside. There are some earphones that are better at this but by no means the ASUS Zenfone 2 earphones do a lousy job with sound isolation
7.5/10
C
Comfort
Metal housings, a standard and effective bullet-style design and overall lightweight makes them very comfortable and easy to put in and re position without any issues nor discomfort.
8/10
EQ
Response to Equalization
The ASUS ZenFone 2 earphones offer a mediocre response to equalization with some improvement of some sections of the audio frequencies while they also enhanced many of the already present issues. Highs noticeably improved brightness and detail while keeping controlled piercing highs and sibilance; mids removed some recession of lower mids but overall became boxy and harsh; bass was quite horrible out of the box and EQ could do nothing at all about it.

Summary
Greatly comfortable and light
Sound leakage levels are very controlled
Soundwise they are pretty mediocre
Bass is too weak
Mids too recessed
An EQ could not do much to improve their sound quality
- We wanted to think that the ASUS ZenFone 2 earphone could have been to the level of the great Elephone E1 earphones but they absolutely do not come near to the Elephone not even by chance. The sound quality of the ASUS ZenFone 2 is mediocre at most with horrible bass and too recessed mids, highs are acceptable but nothing marvelous.
We struggle to recommend the ASUS ZenFone 2, we better advice checking our Earphones Reviews to find a better earphone or take a look at our Best Earphones Charts.
