Beats Solo2

? Beats Solo2, an on-ear headphone with a 90 degree folding mechanism that makes them compact and easy to transport.
The Beats by Dre Solo2 features, besides the folding mechanism, pivoting ear cups for an optimal placement on your ears no matter the shape and size, a closed back design and a detachable/replaceable cable.
The ear cups have a fairly small size which is inline with most on-ear headphones cup’s size, the ear pads are soft and well padded and have a hole in the middle instead of being flat. The headband is flexible with metal inner parts to make them tougher and has a rubberized, slightly padded inner headband section; it’s mechanism has very gratifying clicking steps.
The folding system is also fully built in metal to help them strengthen their durability. On photos the Beats Solo2 may seem fragile but actually their mix of robust plastics and metal results in a very solid construction that feels nice on hands.
The Beats Solo2 is now a discontinued Beats headphone, which makes them harder to find but we have discovered one worldwide shop selling them second-hand, Tomtop.
The very frequent discontinuation of their products and release of newer models is a common practice by Apple but this does not mean that the “older” or discontinued products are not worthy products. In fact, you can benefit from this by having the possibility to get them at a highly discounted price. When released, the Beats Solo2, had an official price of $199.95 and the latest Beats Solo3 Wireless have a price of $299.95, now you can buy the Beats Solo2 second-hand from Tomtop at 60% of the original price and with free worldwide shipping; they also have a duty free shipping option which takes care of customs fees, neat!

Accessories & Packaging
The Beats Solo2 unboxing results in a carrying case and a detachable 3.5 mm cable, all inside a fairly large box. But consider that this are the full accessories that you got when buying them new by getting them second-hand, usually, you will have to sacrifice this.

B
Bass & Sub Bass
The Beats Solo2 bass is energetic with punchy mid-bass and deep sub-bass, we could say that they offer a bit more mid-bass than sub-bass but the difference is subtle and does not get unbalanced. Beats are famous for their fun sound signature and the Beats Solo2 fulfills this position. It can be said that their general sound is not a bass-only headphone; instead, you will get lively and entertaining sound out of this Beats headphones that can cover any bassy music genre without issues.
Applying an EQ, their mid-bass gets some extra punch and sub-bass becomes extremely deep.
We ran the Beats Solo2 through our extreme basshead tests and they were able to handle a whopping 65% of a Fiio E12 Mont Blanc maximum power (custom basshead EQ, bass boost on, high gain) with a jaw dropping increment of mid-bass punch and sub-bass depth reaching an insane amount of basshead rumble and impact.

Mids & Vocals
The Beats Solo2 mids have warm vocals and exhibit mid-bass bleed but do not make lower mids unreasonably congested. Higher mids are less rolled-off, sounding reasonably crisp and clear but do not get harsh. Some part of their middle mids are recessed, which is actually responsible of their somewhat muddy feel. Their cozy and gentle lower vocals can be likable by users that enjoy warm male vocals and mids.
With an EQ mid-bass bleed gets diminished, lower vocals sound clearer and higher mids can be pushed but we do not advise it as their higher mids are already fine and may become harsh. The best EQ for the Beats Solo2 is one aimed to increment dB ranging from 600Hz to 900Hz and if you are careful you can even extend it to 450Hz to 1200Hz getting you clearer male vocals and substantially better sounding mids.

Highs & Treble
The Beats Solo2 highs have enough brightness as to not sound muddy and resolve some detail with a general darkish tint. Some piercing peaks show up from rare time to time while sibilance is not present. Their highs are not forward nor too recessed, it could be said that overall they are smooth and non fatiguing yet not too dark and will probably be welcomed by listeners that get irritated by headphones that sound too sharp or bright.
An EQ makes their highs way brighter and detailed with a very noticeable general improvement that also offers a much more spacious sound, expect consequential stronger piercing peaks.

Sound Leak
The volume output of the Beats Solo2 can reach very high levels and can result in noticeable sound leaking. The basal sound leakage of these Beats headphones is higher than many average headphones; said so, if you get too excited with your listening session and crank up the volume near the top, people nearby will hear your music.

Sound Isolation
The sound isolation provided it is pretty surprising for an on-ear headphone and even better than some over-ear headphones. Noises will get substantially reduced, with a moderate volume you will strongly block your surroundings.

C
Comfort
The clamping force of the Beats Solo 2 is nice, tight and secure; if you find that their pressure is a bit too much you can simply enlarge the headband 1 or 2 clicks. The pads are soft and well-padded and their hollow center reduces the area of the ears being touched and pressed by the ears pads, improving their comfort. Generally speaking, they are very comfortable and offer a snug fit for daily use without risking to fall.

Response to Equalization
The Beats Solo2 responded very well to equalization, showing notable improvement of lower mids, becoming clearer and reducing mid-bass bleed, great response on middle mids removing their laid-back recession; highs benefited from a highly evident extra amount of brightness and detail and sub-bass became crazy profound. Moreover, if you are an expert basshead, the Beats Solo2 can reach crazy basshead impact and rumble.
