The Epomaker G84 could be considered the first release of a new series family, as no other Epomaker keyboard had used the “GXX” model name so far – something similar that we saw with the Epomaker EA75 and the new “EAXX” series.

DESIGN

The Epomaker G84 has 84 keys with an 80% ANSI US layout – no ISO layout is available.

The G84 looks clean and elegant with a less-flashy nature and combining a single-colored pattern for the case and keycaps, while still not falling into a dull aesthetic.

On top of the smooth appearance, the G84 has some embellishing details such as a metal plate near the arrows section, which also holds a horizontal RGB strip light.

In addition to this, the brand has added 2 RGB side-lights on the bottom right and bottom left of the case; both of which are aimed more towards the desk and less to the sides.

If you turn around the keeb, you will find 2-positon adjustable feet, 4 silicone feet and a small central metal plate.

A detail of the case is seen on the front where the brand has included a 45 degree angled shape instead of the typical abrupt 90 degree of most other keyboards on the market, this makes the Epomaker G84 more ergonomic and friendly to the lower palm resting.

With $100 you can buy almost 2 units of the Epomaker G84, yet despite the super affordable price, this keyboard includes very good internal components like:

• 5-layer dampening system
• Gasket mount design
• Lubed switches
• Plate mount stabilizers

On top of that, the south-facing board of the Epomaker G84 is hot-swappable and compatible with most mechanical switches on the market without the need of any soldering to replace them at will.

The specific dampening layers of the keeb are: Poron Sandwich Foam, IXPE Switch Pad, Sound Enhancement Pad, Poron Switch Socket Pad, Bottom Silicone.

The shell/case of the G84 is not metal but still feels more rugged and better constructed than many other plastic keyboards on the market.

KEYCAPS

The Epomaker G84 might have a budget price but offers something that is barely ever seen, shine-through keycaps but made of PBT instead of the cheap-quality ABS of most other shine-through keycaps on the market.

The keycaps have Cherry profile and feel superb to the touch thanks to a smooth textured finish.

Unfortunately, though, the keycaps do not get fully back-lit nor their fonts become too visible – the “issue” is more prominent over the number and F number rows and, overall, if the RGB color chosen if a “darker” or more saturated one.

This is not an issue of brightness as the LEDs are actually brighter than many others but, we are guessing, that this is related to the fact that the shine-through section of the keycaps is aligned on the upper area of the keycaps and the LED in the board are south-facing – we are more than sure that the keycaps would had been perfectly backlit if either the keycaps had the shine-through piece positioned on the lower area or if the board had north-facing LEDs.

Despite this, when the LEDs from the board are turned off, the fonts on the keycaps are perfectly visible, giving a nice contrast of black fonts over pink keycaps.

When buying the Epomaker G84 you will have the option to choose 2 different switches (switches are limited to the color of the keyboard, though):

• Epomaker Creamy Jade

• Epomaker Transparent

The variant that we are reviewing came with Epomaker Creamy Jade, which are the heavier and “slower” of the 2 switches offered.

Both the Creamy Jade and Transparent are linear switches so you will not have the option to choose pre-assembled tactile, silent nor clicky ones out of the box.

The Epomaker Creamy Jade responded with a less-scratchy feel than many other mechanical switches and with a “heavier” keypress experience than on some other linear switches.

The “heavier” nature, though, was not a negative quality as we find them to be excellent to cover all sort of tasks with high efficiency and a pleasure to use for typing.

As most modern Epomaker keyboards, the Epomaker G84 can be used either wired or wirelessly.

Moreover, the model can be connected to 5 different devices by using its 3 slots for Bluetooth connectivity, the 2.4G wireless dongle and its detachable wired design.

The Epomaker G84 has one of the most functional and secure design for storing the dongle in the case itself, which is hidden below one of the adjustable feet on the bottom case – this is a design that we have seen many times but always works without flaws.

SOUND

The Epomaker G84 surprised the team with a thock quality and sound profile that it was, certainly, unexpected at this price point.

The sound achieved out-of-the-box is comparable with what high-tier premium competitors offers or what a DIY keeb enthusiast could reach with some hard-earned custom modding and manual lubing.

If you are wanting superb thock with no fiddling, the Epomaker G84 is probably the most affordable keyboard that you can buy right now with this level of sound quality.

Of course, resonance, pinging and hollow noises are never present with this keyboard.

Moreover, the stabs came pre-lubed with precision as to result in responsive performance and zero rattling.
