The Epomaker HE65 Mec should not be confused with hall-effect keyboards despite the use of “HE” in the model name, in fact, the brand adds “Mec” or “Mag” at the end of the model name to all of the HE series to identify if the specific model corresponds to a mechanical or magnetic keyboard.

The Epomaker HE65 Mec has a 65% ANSI US layout with 66 keys and a knob.

A less-typical detail of the Epomaker HE65 Mec is the placement of its knob, which instead of sitting on the top case area, it has been equipped to the right edge of the shell. This, though, has been intentionally done to be able to fit both a screen and a knob in the same footprint of classic 65% keyboard without having to leave out one or the other one.

The keyboard has a refreshing aesthetical feel due to the pastel, light-blue shell and the use of white, violet and blue keycaps.

On the bottom you will find a 2-step adjustable kickstand, 4 elongated silicone feet that offer superb grip and a silver-mirror alike plate.

The Epomaker HE65 Mec might look small and fun but, still, it is packed with plenty of high-quality components that usually found on high-tier mechanical keyboards.

Among these, the HE65 Mec offers a gasket-mount design, 5 layers of dampening (PRO Sandwich Foam, IXPE Switch Pad, Sound-Enhancement Pad, PRO Case Foam, and Silicon Bottom Pad) and a hot-swappable board compatible with nearly all mechanical switches on the market and without any need to soldering to replace them.

In addition to this, the keeb includes a polycarbonate plate and south-facing RGB LEDs.

KEYCAPS

The keycap set included with the Epomaker HE65 Mec have classic Cherry profile and quality and durable PBT build.

The keycaps have an aesthetic flavor that we have seen on some other light-colored keyboards from Epomaker and some competitors; which results in a nice looking final effect but with still usable contrast and easy readability.

The finish of the keycaps has a subtle texture that is not overly exaggerated as to induce fatigue nor discomfort.

The side-protruding knob has an excellent balance of resistance and smoothness allowing to be controlled with a single finger sliding over it but never registering unintended inputs; this also adds up to a non-halting workflow with quick adjustments of volume settings.

The knob also has a multi-function button function and can be used to navigate through the display screen menus.

The Flamingo switches come pre-lubed from factory and ready to offer pristine performance without any need of manually tuning them.

You can expect a well-balanced switches performance to cover a wide variety of uses with high efficiency and a low rate of typing errors.

The keyboard can be used wired and wirelessly by using a USB-C connection, 2.4G wireless connection or a classic Bluetooth one.

To set the connection mode, you can access a mode switch placed on the rear edge of the case.

In the same section you can find the 2.4G dongle in a dedicated storage slot and the USB-C detachable cable connection.

In 2.4G wireless and wired mode, the HE65 Mec offers 1000Hz of polling rate and 2ms (USB) latency.

SOUND

The Flamingo switches combined with the quality components inside the Epomaker HE65 Mec result in sound profile that could be defined as thocky-poppy.

Certainly, most users will not expect such a refined and well-achieved sound performance from such an affordable keyboard but this seems to be a common standard with most Epomaker keyboards.

On top of that, the stabilizers needed no manual lubing nor retuning as they responded with no rattling.

Pinging nor resonance were present at any given time.

With a battery capacity of 4000mAh, the Epomaker HE65 Mec packs a larger battery than many other compact 65% and 60% keyboards.

This is a welcomed feature as this mechanical keyboard is equipped with a display screen too.
