D

DESIGN
gramophone-256604.75/5

The Epomaker Luma84 is a low-profile keyboard with 84 keys in a 75% ANSI US layout.

Despite the compact footprint, the Luma84 is able to provide much more keys than other keyboards with more or less similar size; for example, the Carbon60 is just a keys column shorter but the Luma84 is able to fit plenty of keys in that space (arrow keys, 4 navigation keys and DEL) – in height, the Luma84 is a keys row taller to fit the full F number row and 3 extra keys.

The case has an almost unibody design with rounded edges and premium aesthetic feel with the use of space grey color for the shell and a 2-keys wide RGB strip light sitting on the top right of the case.

The keycaps set has a classic and efficient use of white engraved fonts over black keycaps; making them extremely easy to read without effort.

The whole set uses this white over black except for the ESC and Enter keys that add a nice color detail by using pastel-blue keycaps with black fonts.

The Epomaker Luma84 is available in 2 different colors:

• Epomaker Luma84 Black blue
• Epomaker Luma84 White purple

CONSTRUCTION & BUILD
gramophone-256605/5

The first and more evident construction element of the Epomaker Luma84 is the fact that the shell is completely made of anodized aluminum, giving it a rugged and quality feel.

What you might not expect from a low-profile keyboard though, is that the board uses mechanical switches with a hot-swappable design.

On top of that underneath the metal case, the Luma84 hides top-tier components such as a gasket mounted design, polycarbonate plate and 5 layers of dampening and cushioning including: Sandwich Foam, Switch Pad, Sand-Enhancement Pad, Switch Socket Foam, Bottom Sound-Absorbing Foam.

In addition to this, the Epomaker Luma84 is VIA compatible and can benefit from the freedom and power of VIA to program it without the need of any background running software to apply and conserve any customization and reprogramming.

KEYCAPS
gramophone-256604.5/5

Yet another quality that sets the Epomaker Luma84 apart from most other low-profile keyboards in the market, is the use of better keycaps.

Specifically, the keycap set of the Luma84 are double-shot PBT with DSA profile and not the cheapo ABS material, ensuring fade-free and long-lasting life – the board has south-facing RGB LEDs but these keycaps are not shine-through.

The finish of the keycaps has a subtle grit that reinforces the anti-slippery performance.

A nice detail about the keycaps is that all Fn functions on each corresponding key are engraved and well-labeled so there is no need to go through the tedious process of grabbing the user manual, remembering each Fn function position and cancelling any guesswork related.

SWITCHES
gramophone-25660
4.25/5

Being that low-profile keyboard’s market has been expanded in the last few years with the introduction of some mainstream commercial brands launching very popular low-profile models, Epomaker has been smart offering the Luma84 with either linear or tactile switches.
The specific switches available pre-assembled with the Epomaker Luma84 are:
• Gateron low-profile red linear
• Gateron low-profile brown tactile
The Luma84 that we are reviewing includes the red linear switches, which presented a heavier personality than other Gateron linears but also a significantly faster response with barely 1.7mm of pre-travel.
To the touch, these Gateron low-profile switches feel smooth and scratchless which might be helped by the fact that these are lubed POM switches.

CON

CONNECTIVITY
gramophone-256604.75/5

In spite of being a low-profile and compact keyboard, the Epomaker Luma84 has a tri-mode connectivity design which allows it to connect through Bluetooth (3 banks), 2.4G wireless (with the included dongle) or wired through the detachable USB-C connector.

What you would also not expect from this type of keyboard is the respectable low latency of 4ms and 1000Hz of polling rate, which combine perfectly with its anti-ghosting capability to become a thinner and smaller gaming keyboard.

S

SOUND
gramophone-256604/5

Low profile keyboards usually do not excel in the sound department. In the case of the Epomaker Luma84, we could say that the keyboard cannot compete with the premium, thocky sound of some of their “normal-profile” keyboards but, still, the Luma84 is probably the best sounding low-profile keyboard that we have reviewed so far.

The plate-mounted stabilizers came perfectly lubed from factory showing no traces of rattling, while the keyboard overall neither shows resonance, hollow sounds nor pinging.

A definition that might reflect the sound profile of the Epomaker Luma84 would be a clean but shyer thocky-poppy flavor.

B

BATTERY
gramophone-256603.75/5

The keyboard holds inside a rechargeable battery with a capacity of 3000mAh, which is less than the typical 4000mAh seen in 75% up to TKL keyboards but the thinner profile and lighter weight might be the reason to use a smaller battery.
