HOLY SERPENT V9 – Review

Holy Serpent V9

HOLY SERPENT V9

| 7 mm Driver |

? The HOLY SERPENT V9 have been reviewed by our editors. The HOLY SERPENT V9 have a peculiarly good looking design and detachable MMCX cables, this model is part of the V line of HOLY SERPENT along with the HOLY SERPENT V7 and are positioned as the top of the line in their catalog next to the HOLY SERPENT D1. HOLY SERPENT is a brand you can rarely hear about as they are difficult to find and there are not many places selling them. The brand used to have a fair amount of earphones and headphones in their catalog but nowadays their current catalog only lists the HOLY SERPENT 6s. The HOLY SERPENT V9 feature detachable MMCX cables, a special design, an IPX4 class waterproof certification and a 7mm driver. The earpieces have a two-section housings design and metal-like finish that makes them look like a piece extracted from a futuristic robot. The cable of the HOLY SERPENT V9 is rounded and very robust with a textured feel to it, a rubberized coating and a memory cable section on the end section near the MMCX connector. You can buy the HOLY SERPENT V9 (if you are able to find them in stock) in 2 colors:

A

Accessories & Packaging

The HOLY SERPENT V9 come packed inside a big packaging that has a magnetic closure (system that, for example, we have seen on our review of the Takstar INGPING H60). After unboxing them you will find 3 pair of deep fit (double-flange) eartips, a cable clip, a soft fabric carrying pouch and the detachable MMCX cable.

B

Bass & Sub Bass

The 7mm dynamic driver of the HOLY SERPENT V9, despite being having a smaller diameter than most average earphones, offers an unexpectedly energetic bass response with a hugely strong mid-bass punch and deep sub-bass (despite not extending as strong on the extreme lower end of the sub-bass frequencies). Bass of the HOLY SERPENT V9 will cover most bass intensive music genres. Despite this, their bass is way boosted and will sound too boomy for most listeners. Applying an EQ, the already very energetic bass becomes immensely punchy and crazy deep. During our extreme bass tests, the HOLY SERPENT V9 took up to 32% of the maximum power coming from a Fiio E12 Mont Blanc while being set to high gain, turning on the bass boost function and using our custom basshead EQ. This amplification resulted in a huge extra amount of punch and sub-bass but the latter became distorted; no basshead rumble or impact was achieved but a very mild impact was offered. If your interest is a strong basshead impact and rumble (after extreme amplification and equalization) you should look at something like the KZ ZST, Senfer 4in1, Xiaomi Mi In-Ear Headphones Pro or if you want some heavy weight champions you could take a look at the Sony MDR-EX800st or the Pioneer SE-CX8.

M

Mids & Vocals

Mids of the HOLY SERPENT V9 are warm, lower vocals are distant and recessed by the crazy strong mid-bass bleed. When bass is less present in a song, lower vocals sound way better. The upper mids do not get harsh and may sound rolled off to many listeners. With an EQ, lower mids sound noticeably less distant and overall lower vocals get much better, higher mids still remain free of harshness.

H

Highs & Treble

Highs on the HOLY SERPENT V9 have very little detail and some brightness with no piercing highs or sibilance. After an EQ a lot of detail is gained and some noticeably increment of brightness is perceived, piercing highs remain under control but sibilance becomes too strong.

SL

Sound Leak

Sound leakage of the HOLY SERPENT V9 is lower than most average earphones by a fair amount, this will allow you to crank the volume a tiny bit higher than with other earphones before their sound leaking becomes too perceivable by nearby people.

SI

Sound Isolation

The sound isolation is very effective with a noticeable subdued perception of surrounding noises even while setting a moderate volume.

C

Comfort

The housings of the HOLY SERPENT V9 not only have a creative design, they also offer outstanding comfort and due to their very narrow profile they fit flush with the ears making them a well-adapted in-ear headphone for bed or to be used under helmets.

EQ

Response to Equalization

Applying our custom equalization to the HOLY SERPENT V9 offered a substantial improvement on most audio frequencies with some cons. Bass got highly punchier and deeper with also boomier sound; mids cleared up greatly on the lower mids section with still no harshness on the higher mids; highs obtained a good amount of extra brightness and a big amount of detail but sibilance got intense.
