🎧 We are reviewing the KBEAR OPAL, the first model release from the brand.
The KBEAR OPAL features a single dynamic driver configuration and plastic housings.
As we just mentioned, their earpieces are made of plastic but the build of unit is combined with metal golden-colored nozzles.
The design of the housings is mainly black colored with a back section that exhibits a carbon-fiber like pattern and a metal logo.
The cable of the KBEAR OPAL is detachable and makes use of MMCX connectors; the cable itself has a braided design, a dark-copper color and metal ends with colored coded rings to recognize each side.
KBEAR is a new brand that was just born, releasing the OPAL as their initial earphone.

The KBEAR OPAL unboxing results in 3 pair of eartips and the detachable MMCX cable.
The unit comes in a a dark-colored rectangular box with a small footprint.
The KBEAR OPAL has clean bass with a fast and tight tuning but, cutting-off way too early – their upper bass might fall a bit short at times.
Mid-bass is not invasive at all but can lack some punch on mid-bass hungry tracks.
Yet, the OPAL is not an earphone with a bass-less personality, punch is present and sub-bass can get sufficiently deep for some tracks.
Applying an EQ, there is an important boost on their sub-bass range with a palpably deeper sound – mid-bass will not get as empowered as it’s sub-bass.
Through out our basshead tests, the KBEAR OPAL took 30% of the max. power of a FiiO A5 amp, showing a way deeper sub-bass response but do not expect any basshead rumble nor impact out of them.

The KBEAR OPAL mids have forward upper mids that can get excessively harsh.
Lower mids show no mid-bass bleed but there is an important recession over their mids, ranging from their lower midrange up to some part of it’s middle mids, which can result in thin sound at times.
The OPAL may lack warmth and too harsh to many listeners that prefer a more intimate sound.
Overall, we find the OPAL to be oddly tuned.
Mids can be partially retuned but there are several unbalanced “flaws” that makes it too complex to try to “repair it” by a standard EQ.
The KBEAR OPAL highs are bright but it does not resolve much detail (it resolves some but feels overstepped by their hot peaks).
Despite the aggressive highs and treble, they do not become frequently sibilant but they are very noticeably piercing.
An EQ adds a massive improvement on detail retrieval and overall sound – if you do not care for the more frequent appearance of their piercing peaks.
The sound leaking out of this earphone is slightly lower than on many average earphones, keeping listening sessions within a normal volume setting will make them acceptably silent to nearby people.

The sound isolation provided by the KBEAR OPAL is higher than average, allowing partial isolation from the environment without having to crank up the volume too high.

The curvy edges, light weight construction and nearly flush fit makes the OPAL a comfortable earphone to wear with low risk of becoming painful.

The response to EQ of the KBEAR OPAL showed great efficiency over their highs and treble but had a hard time “fixing” their midrange.
