? TRN V80, a quad-driver hybrid headphone with a super affordable price.

The TRN V80 features 4 drivers per earpiece with a configuration of 2 balanced armatures, a 10 mm dynamic driver and a 6 mm dynamic driver. Each of these specialized drivers will reproduce specific audio frequencies thanks to a crossover that will “assign/filter” each range to each corresponding driver.

The TRN V80 durability feels rugged thanks to the bi-component build material of their housings. The main construction is made of aluminum but when you get them you will know that something else is there, in fact the material that you feel is ceramics because the housings have a 3-layer coating of enamel on top of the aluminum.

On the back side of the earpieces you will see 3 holes, these are acoustic vents to regulate pressure and airflow.

The TRN V80 was released almost immediately after the release of the TRN V60 (a triple-driver headphone), this might have been a decision made by the brand due to the defective initial batch of the TRN V60 – you can read about this in our TRN V60 disassembly.

The cable of the TRN V80 is detachable and makes use of a bi-pin connector – type of connector found in earphones such as the TFZ Series 2, KZ ED16, RevoNext QT2, RevoNext QT3, KZ ZS6, KZ ZSA, TRN V20, Auglamour RT-1.

The cable has a helix design and metal details such as cable bifurcation, inline mic/remote and 3.5mm plug section.

The TRN V80 price will be slightly lower for the TRN V80 mic-less version.

The TRN V80 unboxing results in the detachable bi-pin cable and 3 pair of eartips. Everything is packed inside a rectangular box – exact same packaging seen in the TRN V20 and TRN V60.

Bass & Sub Bass

The dynamic drivers of the TRN V80 provide rich bass with a full-bodied personality but not boosted. Their mid-bass punch and sub-bass depth will cover most music genres and add fun to any track.

Expect an active bass style but not a bass-only nor a boomy sound out of them – also their sub-bass does not get as deep as other very bassy headphones.

Using an EQ, their sub-bass reaches much more profound depths and mid-bass gains an important amount of punch.

During our extreme basshead tests, the TRN V80 handled up to 37.5% of the maximum power set on a Fiio E12 Mont Blanc. The results showed an extreme empowering of their punch and depth but with no basshead rumble nor impact. Do not expect anything even remotely near the Sony MDR7550, Sony MDR-EX650, Pioneer SE-CX8, KZ ZSR, KZ ZST PRO and not even proximate to the Xiaomi Quantie 2, RevoNext QT2, KZ ZS6.

Mids & Vocals

The TRN V80 mids provide clear enough male vocals and an overall warm sound. Lower mids are gentle but not excessively congested, lower vocals sound sufficiently alive and not too laid back.

Mid-bass bleed is somewhat present but does not crush their lower mids. Higher mids offer decent crispness and smooth peaks that do not become harsh.

Overall expect flattish, serene but not excessively congested mids.

With an EQ, there is a vast improvement of their male vocals and a strong reduction of mid-bass bleed becoming much cleaner overall.

Highs & Treble

The highs of the TRN V80 have good brightness and resolve an adequate amount of detail. They are not a dark sounding headphone, still there are brighter models out there – like the Senfer EN900 and Senfer 4in1.

Highs are not forward and rarely show piercing peaks, but sibilance can appear on sibilant-prone songs.

Applying an EQ, there is a very noticeable addition of brightness. Moreover, they become much more capable regarding the amount of detail resolved.

Sound Leak

The sound leaking out of the TRN V80 is inline with most average earphones. Their sound is mediumly hearable at moderate-high volume settings and will blend with noisy city situations.

Sound Isolation

The sound isolation provided by the TRN V80 is noticeable and fairly stronger than on many normal earphones. This allows them to reach a near absolute isolation when dialing up the volume to high settings.

Comfort

The fairly small size of the earpieces, their smooth edges and solid aluminum + ceramics construction provide an excellent level of comfort.

Response to Equalization

The response to EQ of the quad-drivers of the TRN V80 was highly efficient and showed big improvement in their highs brightness, detail; mids also benefited from cleaner sound and lower congestion while bass could be pushed for very deep and punchy sound.
