Xiaomi Mi Headphones 2nd Generation TDSEJ02JY, the flagship full-sized headphone from Xiaomi.

The Xiaomi Mi Headphones 2nd Generation TDSEJ02JY features graphene drivers, a closed-back design, Knowles MEMS microphone, Kevlar fiber cables and a passive radiator.

There were 2 Xiaomi Mi Headphones versions released in time, both look very alike but are not the same. One of the clearest differences is that one uses beryllium dynamic drivers and the other graphene drivers (version being reviewed in this article). Both materials (graphene and beryllium) are advanced materials for the construction of dynamic drivers that is rarely seen in premium headphones and in-ear monitors.

Xiaomi has been using graphene and beryllium in many of their headphones that we have reviewed like the: Xiaomi Mi Headphones Pro HD (graphene DD), Xiaomi Mi Quantie 2 / Xiaomi QTEJ03JY (newest in-ear model available in preorder with graphene DD)

In theory, the model that we are reviewing is the 2nd generation of Xiaomi Mi Headphones. The 1st version was a semi-open back headphone, while the 2nd gen is a closed-back. One distinct aesthetic difference between both is the rear earcup’s grid, the 1st gen has a classic metal grid, while the 2nd gen has a perforated metal plate.

On the 2nd gen the dynamic driver size is not informed but if they hold inside the same driver diameter as the gen 1, they should be carrying a 50 mm DD; which is quite unexpected considering the small cups size and housings with dimensions inline with most on-ear headphones, which rarely fit anything larger than 30mm to 40mm drivers.

Xiaomi has developed a very respectable worldwide reputation for their high-quality, budget-priced in-ear headphones like the Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Earphones, Xiaomi Mi Pro HD, Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Type-C and Xiaomi Mi In-Ear Headphones Pro. Nonetheless, Xiaomi manufactures also full-sized, on-ear and over-ear headphones (we recently reviewed the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Headset, first gaming headphone from Xiaomi, and they performed pretty well) like the upcoming Xiaomi Mi Headphone Bluetooth TDLYEJ01JY and the Xiaomi Mi Headphone Comfort.

The earcups of the Xiaomi Mi Headphones 2nd Generation TDSEJ02JY are constructed in metal with a golden colored finish and a red inner passive radiator.  Overall, they offer a very solid construction with mostly metal use and some robust quality polyurethane details.

Each earcup has a 2.5mm jack to plug the L and R cable. Each side is marked with a colored jack, red color for the right side and white for the left side and the corresponding cable end has the same color coding to plug them correctly. Moreover, each earcup has a big L and R to easily recognize each side.

The cable of the Xiaomi Mi Headphones 2nd Generation TDSEJ02JY is a Kevlar fiber one with a robust feel and reinforced spring metal ends protection.

Xiaomi ships everything inside a hard packaging with the clean, minimalist style that Xiaomi has been using in in-ear headphones like the Xiaomi Quantie, Xiaomi Mi Pro HD and Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Earphones.

Bass & Sub Bass

The Xiaomi Mi Headphones 2nd Generation TDSEJ02JY bass has a very fun tuning, with strong mid-bass punch and deep sub-bass. Their style is energetic as to fulfill any genre thrown at them but not overly boosted as to get out of control or step extremely over mids/highs and reign the whole sound signature into a bass-only headphone. People enjoying fun bass but founding that some brands overdo it a tad too much might be happy with the tuning of the lower frequencies of the Xiaomi Mi Headphones that achieve strong but not overdone bass.

Applying an EQ, there is a noticeable increase in punch and monumental deepening of their sub-bass.

Mids & Vocals

The Xiaomi Mi Headphones 2nd Generation TDSEJ02JY have warm, cozy mids, with perceivable mid-bass bleed but alive vocals. Male vocals can get a bit congested with strong mid-bass tracks but it is not excessive. Higher mids provide good crispness without turning harsh but do not expect a higher mids forward style. Harshness is not an issue at all with the Xiaomi Mi Headphones. Their resulting mids are pleasantly tuned for people enjoying cozy, smooth and non-harsh mids.

A correct use of a custom EQ significantly cleans up their lower vocals and reduces mid-bass bleeding presence. Higher mids can also be boosted a bit without introducing harshness.

Highs & Treble

The highs of the Xiaomi Mi Headphones 2nd Generation TDSEJ02JY provide sufficient brightness and detail for most normal listening sessions; piercing and sibilant highs are not present. They are not a V-shaped nor a highs-centered headphone but as on mids/vocals, their overall highs offer a very pleasant experience for normal listeners that enjoy non-fatiguing sound but neither falling into dark and detail-less sound.

An EQ, improves vastly their highs with a strong addition of brightness and making them resolve a substantial extra amount of detail. In general, their highs gain a more open sounding style while conserving their smooth, non-piercing nor sibilant style

Sound Leak

The sound leaking out of the Xiaomi Mi Headphones 2nd Generation TDSEJ02JY is lower than on most on-ear and over-ear headphones. You can feel safe and crank the volume way up before anything is even hearable by nearby people.

Sound Isolation

The sound isolation provided by the Xiaomi Mi Headphones 2nd Generation TDSEJ02JY is incredibly unexpected for an on-ear headphone. Their sort of hybrid earpads that embrace the ears almost like an over-ear headphone helps them out to achieve this elevated level of isolation.

Comfort

The Xiaomi Mi Headphones 2nd Generation TDSEJ02JY have pads that are soft, well-padded and made of leather. The earpads are hollow in the center and have a size and fit that makes them almost and over-ear headphone with a very reduced size (will depend on the size of each person’s ears).

A nice leather headband with stitching details, a good “dented” padding and metal structure adds up to their pleasant wearing experience.

The small, hard carrying case holds them perfectly inside as the headphone fully folds.
