To be honest, we have seen some YUNZII keyboards on many mainstream online shops but this is the first time that we are reviewing one from the brand.

Oddly, other colors come with more keycaps than the white one like we have. Also, the keyboard is supposed to come with a keycap puller/switch remover but the unit that we own did not have it inside the package.

DESIGN

The YUNZII AL66 is a 65% keyboard with 66 keys and a knob. Having a 65% layout, the YUNZII AL66 is much smaller than a 75% or TKL keyboard, offering a compact, yet useable size that becomes more productive and less limiting than a standard 60% keyboard thanks to the dedicated arrow keys, knob and extra keys like Delete, PgUp, PgDown.
The specific color variant that we are reviewing has a silver colored case with 3-color keycaps, where the main ones are white with black fonts and the accent keycaps use a light grey and dark blue color.
Right between the left arrow key and right CTRL, there are 2 small rounded light indicators to have a quick insight of the status of the keyboard.
The YUNZII AL66 is available in 4 different colors:
• YUNZII AL66 silver (model that we are reviewing)
• YUNZII AL66 blue
• YUNZII AL66 pink
• YUNZII AL66 black
The YUNZII AL66 can also be chosen as a barebones keyboard to be assembled.

CONSTRUCTION & BUILD

The case of the keyboard is almost 100% made of CNC aluminum with the exception of 2 “window strips” on the side edges of the shell that act as frosted, translucid covers for the side RGB LED lights – these frosted windows are made of plastic.
Internally, the AL66 has a hot-swappable board compatible with most mechanical switches (without soldering) and includes a gasket mounted structure with several quality elements such as a PC plate and dampening layers.
The aluminum case has a bit of a “sandy” finish feel which we do not particularly love as is not as smooth as others but this is a personal preference.
Of course, as expected by a keyboard with metal case, the feet are fixed and non-adjustable – practically no metal keyboard on the market has adjustable feet.

KEYCAPS

The keycaps have a nice subtle grainy finish and make use of a high contrast of black fonts over cream/white keycaps body, making them very easy to read in well-lit and also dark rooms.
A particular detail about the keycaps of the AL66 is that the black keycaps (spacebar, enter, arrow keys) have a much coarser sandy finish, which provide tactile recognition of the keys without having to look at them.
The keycaps are made of PBT with dye-sub and have cherry profile.

The YUNZII AL66 comes only with 1 switches options, the YUNZII Milk.
These are linear switches with well-balanced specs making it neither too light nor too heavy and fairly fast with 2mm of pre-travel.
The switches come lubed from factory, so you will not be forced to go through the tedious process of lubing 66 switches.

This YUNZII model is a tri-mode keyboard that allows to be used both wired or wirelessly by recurring to the USB-C detachable cable for wired use and either choosing to use the wireless connection through Bluetooth or with 2.4G tech with the included wireless dongle.

TYPING

The AL66 was fun to use for typing due to the solid metal case with stable, non-slippery feet and a remarkably good sound out of the box.
On the other hand, the keyboard kept defaulting to set the number keys to their “special layer function” instead of the normal number function.
GAMING

The brand does not mention specs like polling rate but does explicitly lists that the keyboard is NKRO.
This combined with other gaming-welcomed specs can make it a very good gaming keyboard.
TABLET/MOBILE

For portability, the keyboard has some qualities like a compact size and good battery size but the metal case makes is particularly heavy device to be carrying it around the whole day.
For mobile users with a fixed-setup, the AL66 will work well thanks to its Bluetooth connectivity.

LIGHTING

The switches of the YUNZII AL66 do not have a LED lens to diffuse and maximize the RGB effects but the brand has smartly positioned a diffusing top cover plate that acts as a light diffuser sitting over the south-facing LEDs from the board.
As a result of this, the light patterns on the YUNZII look nice an evenly spread across the body of the keyboard.
On top of that, the characteristic strip lights on the edges of the case provide an embelishing addon

SOUND

The sound profile of the YUNZII AL66 could be better defined as thocky with a clacky bounce back.
Overall, the keyboard is well-assembled with good pre-lubing from factory but, if being picky, some extra lube over the stabs could had helped to fully remove any undesired noises.
Despite this, the YUNZII AL66 offers a much better thocky sound experience than many other budget keyboards.

For a small keyboard like this one, YUNZII has equipped a fairly larger battery than seen on competitors. To be more precise, the battery capacity if 4600mAh.
