Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Earphones – Review

Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Earphones

Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Earphones

| Balanced Armature | Double Dynamic Driver | Active Noise Cancelling |

? We are reviewing the Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Earphones which are the 2nd version of their Active Noise Cancelling models (preceded by the Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Type-C In-Ear Headphones), the 2nd earphone that Xiaomi has trusted to the company TiinLab Acoustic Technology instead of 1MORE and the latest model of every Xiaomi in-ear headphone so far.

The Xiaomi Mi Active Noise Cancelling Earphones features a triple driver hybrid configuration with 2 dynamic drivers and a balanced armature, as the name suggests, it has Active Noise Cancelling that can be turned on from the inline module and up to 12hs of battery. Moreover, the incorporated Active Noise Cancelling function offers 2 levels of cancellation strength with a simple switch.

Usually hybrid configurations have a good starting point to potentially provide good sound quality, this Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Earphones Review will put them through our strict soundtests and evaluate their performance.

The housings of the Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Hybrid Earphones are built in titanium (yes, you heard right) and have a beautiful pearled finish; you will immediately get a sensation of quality and robustness when you feel them in your hands.

The cables are rounded and have the same half braided, half rubberized style as the Xiaomi Mi In-Ear Headphones Pro, for example.

We have already reviewed many Xiaomi earphones and most of them showed a stellar performance with a highly affordable price; some of the models that we have already reviewed are (try to tolerate Xiaomi’s namings):

Xiaomi has the tendency to name their earphones quite confusingly with similar and long labels (we talked about this during several of our Xiaomi Reviews) and this Xiaomi model is no exception, you will find it with the following names: Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling In-Ear Headphones, Xiaomi Mi Hybrid Noise Cancelling Earphones, Xiaomi 3.5mm Noise Cancelling Earphones, Xiaomi Active Noise Cancelling ANC Earphones Hybrid. But to be fair, the only 2 model names reported on the packaging are: Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Earphones and Xiaomi JZEJ02JY.

Through out our review we might refer to it with any of the aforementioned (do not get confused) and unless the words “USB Type-C” or just “Type-C” appears on the name, you will be getting this model that we are reviewing and not the Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Type-C In-Ear Headphones, which we have reviewed a couple of weeks ago.

The Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling In-Ear Headphone is compatible with Android and Apple devices.

Advanced Features

As we mentioned in the introduction of this Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Hybrid Earphones Review, they have an incorporated Active Noise Cancelling function. This function can be activated from the ANC module that is also the microphone and remote (the mic/remote has a 3-button control with volume buttons)

Differently to the Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling USB Type-C In-Ear Headphones, this model has a 3.5mm headphone connector and, even more interestingly, 2 different levels of Active Noise Cancelling that can be selected at any time and a triple hybrid driver configuration instead of dual hybrid drivers.

If you are worried about the battery, do not fear, you can still listen to music after the battery has run out of juice.

Accessories & Packaging

The Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling In-Ear Headphones unboxing results in 4 pair of eartips, a nice soft carrying pouch (like the one that the Xiaomi Mi Pro HD includes) and a hard carrying/storage case (like the one of the 1MORE Piston Classic) The packaging is a plastic transparent box.

B

Bass & Sub Bass

The Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Earphones bass is admirably achieved with the exact amount of mid-bass punch and sub-bass depth to provide a full sound with also energy and fun but not getting excessive or out of place. The lower end of the Xiaomi will make happy any kind of listener enjoying the right quantity of lower frequencies, with a persuasively potent bass style and will offer as much sub & mid bass as needed at any given moment.

Using an EQ, their mid-bass and sub-bass can be transformed into a bassy type with a highly punchy and deep response. Our take here, do not EQ them they have a magnificent bass as they are.

We always run every earphone tested through our standardized extreme bass tests to highly stress them, find out their impact and rumble potential and discover the Best Basshead Earphones but as the Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Earphones have an ANC circuitry we have not made them undergo these tests because it could potentially damage it’s Active Noise Cancelling components.

Mids & Vocals

The Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Earphones mids are crisp on the upper mids and clear enough on the lower and middle mids. Regarding harshness, there are never harsh or fatiguing peaks. Most listeners will be glad with their warm and smooth but still clear mids.

Applying an EQ their mids get amazingly clear and open with crispier higher mids that remain free of harsh peaks and lower vocals gain much more presence in each track, sounding greatly alive and energetic.

H

Highs & Treble

The Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Earphones resolve a very good amount of detail and have a well-achieved level of brightness. Piercing and sibilant highs are not very frequent nor strong.

With an EQ, highs of the Xiaomi get jaw dropping bright and detailed but sibilance will get empowered. To be honest, once again, there is no need to EQ them, their highs are excellent OTB.

Sound Leak

The sound that leaks out of these Xiaomi earphones will be perceivable in more quiet situations or if you crank up the volume. Their leaking levels are not as if you were using an open-back headphone (like the Sennheiser HD 600), they are just a bit more hearable than many average earphones.

Sound Isolation

Passive noise isolation coming from these Xiaomi in-ear headphones is very substantial with a clear reduction of the perceived surrounding noises no matter how low you set the volume of your music.

The “cherry of the cake” of the Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Earphones is that they also have an ANC system incorporated that actively cancels noises by recognizing noise frequencies with their microphones and emitting an exact opposite sound curve on-the-fly. The result to your ears will be a cancellation of the perceivable noise. You can opt for 2 different levels of ANC strength according to your needs, that you can change by moving the switch on the module from the first position to the 2nd one.

During our Active Noise Cancellation tests and measurements the Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Earphones were able to reduce (on “High” mode) approximately 35 dB on their most effective audio frequencies and 16 dB on their least effective ones. If you prefer a less pronounced noise cancellation you can switch to their low setting, on this mode they reduced 19.5 dB on their most effective audio frequencies and 12.7 dB on the least effective. When set on high mode the measured values are astonishing, offering a dB reduction not far from the BOSE QuietComfort20 (review here) and way way better than the Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling USB Type-C In-Ear Headphones.

Earphones and headphones with active noise cancelling usually have 2 type of problems: hiss and sound quality variation; the Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Earphones has none of them. Hiss is a recurrent problem of ANC earphones that is hearable when turning on the ANC function, the Xiaomi has little to no hiss at all. Sound quality issues are the alteration of sound quality when using them with ANC ON or OFF, once again the Xiaomi has no issues here with absolutely no variation in sound with ANC ON or ANC OFF.

Just in case, we quote ourselves from the Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Type-C Headphones review to briefly explain you what can be expected from nowadays Active Noise Cancelling:

… have an active noise cancelling system that will actively reduce the perception of surrounding noises, this technology is extremely effective for noises of airplane cabins and constant sounds with lower sound frequencies. Voices of people chatting or babies crying are not efficiently reduced by any Active Noise Cancelling technology to date.

C

Comfort

The size, shape and design style of this Xiaomi in-ear headphone is almost identical to the Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Type-C Headphones and to the Xiaomi Mi Pro HD, this means that they offer the same outstanding level of comfort and fit. You can wear them for hours and will never feel any pain or in-ear tightness. Additionally, the superb construction materials will gratify you with titanium housings, metal mic/remote/ANC module and a 90 degree 3.5mm connector, also made of metal.

EQ

Response to Equalization

The Xiaomi Mi Noise Cancelling Earphones demonstrated an almost exemplary response to every EQ that we applied. Bass could be sent into bassy punchy/deep territory; lower vocals became fantastically lively and higher mids crispier but not harsh; higher frequencies gained a crazy level of brightness and detail.
