Beats urBeats
| Dynamic Driver |
? We are testing and reviewing the Beats urBeats. Love it or hate it, the Beats urBeats have achieved a massive coverage of listeners/owners that could be partially due to marketing but also there is something about their sound signature that attires the attention of such a vast public.
As ThePhonograph.net is no fan club nor hate club of any brand and/or model we thought it was about time to give the Beats urBeats a space in our reviews database with our usual unbiased and in-depth tests as always. The Beats urBeats soundtests in our review will reveal how this ultra-popular model performs.
The Beats urBeats features metal housings and hold inside a single dynamic driver with an unknown diameter as it has not been disclosed by the manufacturer. Not specifying the drivers size is something than many big brands do, for example Sennheiser frequently does this too.
Beats launched the Beats urBeats3 later after the release of the Beats urBeats model that we are reviewing now, just like they did with the Beats Powerbeats3, replacing the Beats Powerbeats2.
The cable of the Beats urBeats is flat and very rubberized to reduce tangling issues, there is an inline mic/remote with 3 buttons that will allow you to skip songs, play/pause music, answer/reject calls and control volume levels.
Beats by Dr. Dre offers/offered some special editions of their earphones, headphones and speakers which are born in collaboration with many famous brands or artists, among the special editions you can find the:
- Beats Fendi – with the Beats Pro Fendi wrapped in Fendi’s Selleria leather
- Beats urBeats Nicki Minaj pink
- Beats Hello Kitty – a Hello Kitty’s 40th Anniversary special editions of the Beats urBeats Hello Kitty and Beats Solo2 Hello Kitty
- Beats Third Man Records limited edition – with the Beats Solo3 Third Man
- Beats Undefeated – with 3 times collaboration including the BeatsX Undefeated, Beats Powerbeats2 Undefeated and Beats Pill Undefeated
- Beats Balmain – with the Beats Studio Wireless Balmain, Beats Powerbeats3 Balmain
- Beats Alexander Wang – with 2 times collaboration, first with the Beats urBeats Alexander Wang and then with the Beats Studio Wireless Alexander Wang
- Beats Fragment – with the Beats Pill Fragment and Beats Solo2 Fragment
- Beats Barry McGee – including the Beats Pill Barry McGee
- Beats MCM
- Beats LINE FRIENDS – with the Beats Solo3 LINE FRIENDS
The Beats urBeats is compatible with Android and Apple devices but the mic/remote will be fully functional with Apple devices with a 3.5mm headphone jack.
By becoming so massively popular, there is also a big amount of counterfeit Beats urBeats on the market so it is important to be aware and buy them from a reputable seller like the ones linked in this review.
You can buy the Beats urBeats in a broad variety of colors:
- Beats urBeats black
- Beats urBeats white
- Beats urBeats red
- Beats urBeats blue
- Beats urBeats pink
- Beats urBeats purple
- Beats urBeats silver
- Beats urBeats space gray
- Beats urBeats Nicki Minaj pink

Accessories & Packaging
The Beats urBeats unboxing results in 3 pair of eartips (1 double flange and 2 single flange + the 4th pair already placed on the earpieces), a cable clip, a big Beats sticker and a soft silicone carrying pouch. Everything comes inside a square box with a transparent plastic front. The Beats urBeats used to come in a bigger packaging with a side-opening system and a different carrying pouch.

B
Bass & Sub Bass
The Beats urBeats bass is highly punchy and deep with probably more mid-bass than sub-bass but still not lacking neither. Their bass style is strongly bassy and aggressive but they are not the most bass-intensive earphone that we have reviewed, you can check our Best Fun Sounding Earphones Chart to look for more bassy earphones.
Applying an EQ, their mid-bass and sub-bass gets noticeably enhanced, being depth their most noticeable increment.
During our extreme bass tests the Beats urBeats handled 45% of the maximum power of a Fiio E12 amplifier while being set to high gain, with bass boost turned on and applying a custom basshead EQ. As a result, they gained a huge amount of punch and depth providing a mild basshead rumble and impact inline with the KZ ATE but way below the Sony MDR-EX650, Sony MDR-EX800st, KZ ZST, KZ ZSR, Xiaomi Mi In-Ear Headphones Pro, Senfer 4in1 and Pioneer SE-CX8 / Pioneer SE-CX9.

M
Mids & Vocals
The Beats urBeats mids are very warm and show perceptibly strong mid-bass bleed, despite this their lower vocals do not sound distant for normal listening sessions. Higher mids are crisp but never harsh. Overall their mids will be smooth, non-fatiguing with energetic vocals but congested on the lower vocals range.
Using an EQ, their lower vocals clear up importantly and their higher mids become much crispier but start to sound harsh too.

H
Highs & Treble
The Beats urBeats highs have some brightness and are also able to resolve a small bit of detail, despite the aforesaid there is a clear dark tint in their highs sound. Piercing highs are not present but sibilance can show up according to the level of sibilance-tendency that the track being listened presents.
With an EQ, their highs open and brighten up significantly with also a very noticeable amount of added detail. Piercing highs remain under control but sibilance becomes strong and frequent.
6.25/10
SL
Sound Leak
The sound that leaks out of the Beats urBeats is marginally less noticeable than many average earphones, nearby people will hear sound coming out from them if you set your volume above a low setting but they would not cause much problem on normal everyday situations.

SI
Sound Isolation
Noise isolation provided is minimally inferior to most average earphones, surrounding noises will be attenuated but not fully unless you crank up the volume far past moderate.

C
Comfort
The bullet-shaped housings, their contained size and metal materials add up to an overall very comfortable fit and experience, you can use the Beats urBeats for a very long time and no discomfort or pain will arise. At the same time, they fit snugly and secure enough to undergo a full normal daily commute use without dropping off your ears.

EQ
Response to Equalization
The Beats urBeats presented evident improvement by applying our custom EQs. Mids benefited from much clearer and less congested vocals but with some harsh presence; highs became noticeably brighter and more detailed with no extra piercing peaks but stronger and frequent sibilance; bass added mid-bass punch and way deeper sub-bass.
