The LEOBOG K81 comes inside in a fair packaging with good protection.

Inside you get:

• 4x tactile switches
• USB cable
• Keyboard cover
• Feet addons
• Switch puller / keycap puller

It would be nice if more keyboards started to adopt the same generosity as seen on the LEOBOG K81 adding always replacement switches or also a different flavor of the chosen switch to try and test.

DESIGN

The LEOBOG K81 is a 75% mechanical keyboard with 81 keys and a knob.

The case of the K81 is fully transparent allowing to see the internals of the keyboard and providing a strong wow-factor as soon as you turn on its RGB lights.

The Leobog K81 has nailed the transparency design with an actually functional and not limiting transparent design; unlike what happened with KiiBOOM keyboards.

The back edge of the keyboard holds the mode switch, the port for the wired connection, while the bottom is equipped with 4 large feet dots and a metal plate with the information of the keyboard.

The LEOBOG K81 is available in 5 different colors:

Each color variant of the LEOBOG K81 has a very different aesthetic look and keycaps design, the most transparent of all models is the LEOBOG K81 Mint Salt (the one that you see in our review) and the LEOBOG K81 Morse Code.

CONSTRUCTION & BUILD

This LEOBOG keyboard has a case that is made of transparent polycarbonate with a massive thickness of PC used to construct the unit, resulting in a sturdy and durable feel.

On top of that the K81 is a gasket mounted keyboard with shock absorption and dampening layers with industry-standard elements such as dual dampening cotton layers, switch PORON foam pad, PET case foam and a silicone pad.

As a matter of fact, you can feel the amount of build material used in the LEOBOG K81 by its hefty weight of 1.1kg.

Unlike nearly every other similar case, the brand includes 2 snapping dot feet that can be placed on the fixed back feet to add a 2nd tilting angle option, thus also optimizing the ergonomics of the keyboard. If you happen to also own the LEOBOG Hi75, these addon feet dots are compatible with the Hi75 too.

KEYCAPS

The keycaps of the LEOBOG K81 have a smarter pudding design that allows to benefit from the embellishing transparency of the unit but not blinding you like what was seen with KiiBOOM Phantom keyboards. This is thanks to a top layer of the keycap not being transparent and having a solid white fill color.

On the other hand, in the case of the specific keycaps of the LEOBOG K81 Mint Salt, the fill-in color with the legends seem to be printed over the top layer and not beneath it, so we cannot ensure that they will withstand the fading effects like double-shot or sub-dye PBT keycaps.

Nonetheless, the keycaps are well-built with a combination of polycarbonate and PBT.

The knob of the K81 is also fully transparent, is equipped with a dedicated backlight and offers the excellent smooth and responsive characteristics that we have seen on knobs of other LEOBOG keyboards.

The K81 has a triple mode connection that includes a detachable wired USB-C, 2.4G wireless with the included dongle and a multi-slot Bluetooth one.
All connections were stable and responsive at all times.

CUSTOMIZATION & REPROGRAMMING

The LEOBOG K81 has a hot-swappable board so you can replace the switches as many times as you want without having to go through the risky process of soldering.

The keyboard is also equipped with on-board memory to save any of the settings and customizations that you apply without needing to have a background running software – you only need to keep the software running if you want to make use of the dynamic sound lighting effects.

Regarding software personalization, the keyboard accepts per-key macros and reprogramming for all keys including all of the F number row, being the only exception the knob, which cannot be reprogrammed.

Having a compact 75% layout but still equipped with navigation keys and most useful additional keys like F number row, Home, DEL, etc. the K81 can cover the needs for office, business and general purpose use without compromising too much the usability.

Featuring Bluetooth wireless connection and plenty of keys to ease up the work with phones and tablets, the LEOBOG can comply with the necessity of mobile users.

On the other hand, at 1.1kg, the K81 might be a bit on the heavy side to carry around the whole day with you.

LIGHTING

The LEOBOG K81 can reach particularly high brightness levels, which combines with the special transparent build into a gorgeous light effect that you cannot obtain with classic keyboard cases.

On the other hand, if you boost the brightness to the max. you could start losing a bit of the readability of the keycap’s legends.

SOUND

Sound-wise, the LEOBOG K81 is closer to other transparent keyboards than to the deep thockiness of the LEOBOG Hi75. Yet, the K81 offers a more polished clacky sound with a deeper pitch than KiiBOOM keyboards.

The K81 exhibited a clean profile that does not present hollow nor resonant sound with, also, no pinging nor metallic springy noises.

SOFTWARE

Unfortunately, there is no universal software for LEOBOG keyboards. This means, that each model will require a dedicated software that is only functional with that specific keyboard model.

If you happen to have many LEOBOG keyboards, then you will have to have multiple LEOBOG software installed.

BATTERY

The LEOBOG K81 is equipped with an average sized battery of 3000mAh, which is the same capacity of the one of the CIDOO V75 PRO but due to the lovely RGB design of the LEOBOG you will be tempted to keep the LED lights turned on at all times.

Having to power so many LEDs and the wireless modes, the K81 could had benefited from a beefier battery.
