JAYS a-JAYS FIVE

| Custom A5 Dynamic Driver |

? JAYS a-JAYS FIVE, the 5th generation of the a-JAYS in-ear headphones line.

The JAYS a-JAYS FIVE features a single dynamic driver per earpiece inside metal shells with a rubberized finish.

To be more precise, the driver inside the a-JAYS FIVE is the “JAYS custom A5”, which the brand specifies that delivers a frequency response of 18 – 23000 Hz, 16 Ohm impedance and 96 dB of sensitivity.

In the recent times, the brand has recently newer headphones models and introduced new product lines such as the:

Different to the previous models on the a-JAYS line, the a-JAYS FIVE was the first to introduce a whole new shell form factor and design, with a more stylized and slimmer profile.

The JAYS a-JAYS FIVE is compatible with Android, Windows and Apple devices but the compatibility of the remote will be limited to the model that you buy.

Tests & Scores

A

Accessories & Packaging

The JAYS a-JAYS FIVE unboxing results in an outstanding packaging and presentation (like most JAYS headphones)

Jays did also not cheap-out on the amount and quality of accessories bundled, including: 5 pair of silicone eartips, a cable clip and a very nice hard case that follows the same clean design of the overall unit.

CB

Cable

The cable of the JAYS a-JAYS FIVE is flat and very rubberized with a sturdy build quality that feels durable and long lasting.

Moreover, this type of cable design grants a fully tangle-free experience. The 3.5mm connector is L-shaped and particularly slim and small.

The a-JAYS FIVE comes with a 3-button remote/mic with dedicated volume buttons and a very well-achieved tactile feedback – somewhat similar remote is found on the JAYS a-Six Wireless and the JAYS a-JAYS Four+.

B

Bass & Sub Bass

The JAYS a-JAYS FIVE has a nicely balanced bass with punchy mid-bass punch and a good depth – still, they will remain short of sub-bass depth on bass-intensive genres.

Overall, their lower frequencies can be defined as balanced with a mildly tendency to a tight tuning.

Moreover, their bass is not boomy or boosted, that results in a clean overall sound signature yet warm and full-bodied.

Applying an EQ there is a noticeable deeper sub-bass and a slightly punchier response – do not expect to transform them into a bass-monster earphone.

Through out our extreme basshead tests, the JAYS a-JAYS FIVE handled up to 30% of the max power of a FiiO A5 revealing a much more aggressive and intense bass response that can reach deeper sub-bass notes but will be far from offering any kind of basshead rumble or impact.

M

Mids & Vocals

The JAYS a-JAYS FIVE have somewhat clear and agreeable crisp higher mids. Further aspects that define their midrange are fairly clean lower vocals with sufficiently controlled mid-bass bleed, yet warm and mostly smooth.

On the other hand, some harshy peaks can arise at times when very strong peaks on tracks show up or when vocals are shouty.

With a custom EQ, users will be able to boost up lower vocals and will noticeably open up but try not to touch the higher mids or they will become harsh as they are already sufficiently forward on the higher midrange.

H

Highs & Treble

The JAYS a-JAYS FIVE have good brightness with enough detail for most everyday listening session.

Sound is well-balanced between a not overly sharp nor too rolled-off sound that results in a sufficiently clear tuning as to be neither too muddy nor too forward.

Regarding their fatiguing peaks, sibilance can arise and become noticeable with sibilant prone songs while piercing highs are not as frequent.

An EQ can reveal a much more detailed sound but none of our custom equalization were able to remove sibilance without loosing their remarkable brightness.

SL

Sound Leak

The sound leaking out of the Jays is slightly less noticeable than on most average headphones. This does not make it a particularly silent earphone when cranking up the volume but will neither be an issue for normally noisy situations, daily commuting, etc.

SI

Sound Isolation

The sound isolation provided by the JAYS a-JAYS FIVE is fair yet they will not win any prize as the most isolating earphones on the market.

Partial isolation will be noticed right away but it will needed to dial up the volume above moderate-high to obtain a more efficient strength.

C

Comfort

The earpieces of the Jays Five are very well thought with their tiny size and slim profile. As a point of reference of their reduced footprint, their eartips are bigger than the main housing.

In addition to this, all the corners and overall shape of the shells are rounded and smooth which result in a wonderfully comfortable experience – even for endless listening sessions.

The only “flaw” of their design is that their rugged, flat, rubberized cable is weighty in comparison to the tiny shells which might make the earpieces to pop out the ears at times – though this is a issue that has been reported by some owners, most of our team did not see this problem happening when switching to the biggest eartips that offered the tightest fit.

EQ

Response to Equalization

The response to EQ of the JAYS a-JAYS FIVE was highly efficient on some ranges by opening up or revealing detail but struggled to solve some of the “cons” presented OTB.
