? KZ ASF, one of the newest multi-driver, wired earphones from KZ.
This model is a penta earphone with 5-drivers per side that hold, exclusively, balanced armature drivers.
Inside each earpiece there are the following BA drivers: 2x31736s, 1×3009, 1x22955s, 1x39689s.
The build and construction of the unit sports a main resin housing with metal back plates and nozzles – the color matching of these resin-metal components will be blue-silver-gold for the blue model and black-black-gold for the black model.

This model comes in the typical black packaging seen in many 2020 and 2019 earphones from KZ.
The packaging is well-built and offers a side-opening design (like a book).
Inside, users will find 3 pair of eartips, a detachable 2-pin cable and a metal plate engraved with the model name and driver’s configuration (the cable included is a 100-core silver-plated)

Bass & Sub Bass
The KZ ASF bass is punchy and fun with a strong response that can fulfill the needs of nearly any genre and track.
Sub-bass can get deep as to sound sufficiently balanced with it’s mid-bass response – yet, it will feel less boosted than it’s mid and upper bass.
The overall bass of the ASF is, still, capable of keeping it’s profile “under control” without showing excessive bounciness and an acceptably tight flavor – given the bassy signature.
For bass lovers, an EQ can push the sort-of balanced bass of the KZ ASF into a very deep and massively punchy sounding earphone; as expected, though, bleed and a bass-centered sound signature will be prominent.

Mids & Vocals
The KZ ASF has a busy and messy midrange that suffers from an overly recessed response over the middle mids.
Despite this, the upper mids exhibit a sudden spike that translates in harshness with strong upper mids notes and vocals.
On the other hand and in spite of being a busy sounding earphone, the KZ ASF does not show excessive mid-bass bleed nor laid back male vocals.
Overall, the KZ ASF presents a shameful tuning over their midrange – mostly considering the usual performance of older KZ earphones.
With an EQ, their midrange can be partially fixed but the KZ ASF will conserve the cons mentioned above.

Highs & Treble
The KZ ASF, unfortunately, did neither shine in this area. The upper end showed an extreme roll-off dip that is far from expected from a multi-driver earphone.
In addition to this, the ASF was unable to resolve any significant detail; while, also, balancing towards a darkish and muddy sound profile.
As if this was not enough, the KZ AS, somehow, was still able to exhibit very frequent piercing peaks – yet, sibilance was not too much of an issue.
With a total number of 10 specialized drivers, it is hard to understand the inefficiency of the KZ ASF over highs and treble ranges.
Applying an EQ, highs were able to offer a tiny bit of detail and added brightness but the ASF did never “leveled up” from it’s shameful performance.

Sound Leak
The KZ ASF can have significant levels of leakage when cranking up the volume.
As a point of reference, this model leaks more sound than most average headphones but the intensity can fall within tolerable for daily commuting when keeping your music listening at a moderate volume setting.

Sound Isolation
The deep and tight fit of the KZ ASF adds up to the isolation and efficiency, resulting in an excellent performance that can easily surpass any normal headphone’s capabilities.

Comfort
The design of the KZ ASF has a clear inheritance from some excellent fitting models from KZ such as the KZ ZS4, KZ ZS3/ZS3E.
This form factor ensure an outstandingly secure fit that feels nearly like some custom-IEM.
Nevertheless, it is fair to highlight that the meaty size and wavy design can introduce some discomfort with longer lasting sessions.

EQ
Response to Equalization
The only range (regarding EQ response) that is worth mentioning is their lower frequencies which were easily boosted with a correct EQ; while mids and highs had a messy performance that was hardly fixable by any complex custom equalization.
