? KZ ZS4, the latest dual driver hybrid earphone from KZ.

The KZ ZS4 features one balanced armature + one dynamic driver, (per side). The diameter of the dynamic driver is 8mm and the specific balanced armature inside is the 30095 model.

The KZ ZS4 comes as the newest replacement of the KZ ZS3 (as the name suggests) with a new multi-driver configuration, instead of the single dynamic driver of the ZS3. The KZ ZS4 is not only named after the KZ ZS3 but has also inherited the same housing shape, size and build materials.

The KZ ZS4 is offered with or without an inline remote/microphone, if you want to save a tiny bit of money you can always opt for the mic-less version.

The cable of the KZ ZS4 is a newer one that has not been seen before on any other KZ earphone. This new cable is now black, much more rubberized and thinner but conserves the helix style of the recent versions like the KZ AS10, KZ ZS10, KZ ES4, KZ ZSA – different color than the cable of the KZ BA10.

The KZ ZS4 unboxing results in 3 pair of eartips and the detachable bi-pin cable. Everything comes inside the same kind of packaging as every latest KZ headphone, which is a small rectangular box with a clean design.

Bass & Sub Bass

The KZ ZS4 bass is very energetic with a lot of punch and is able to reach good depth.

On the other hand, it’s style is bouncy and over-emphasized on the upper bass range but if you are looking for a very bassy headphone you will probably like these.

Applying an EQ, there is a noticeable deeper sub-bass response and some extra punch.

During our extreme bass tests the KZ ZS4 handled 40% of a FiiO E12 (newer model called FiiO A5), introducing a crazy strong bass response with even mild rumble and impact but not as strong as the KZ ZSR, Xiaomi Mi In-Ear Headphones Pro, Sony MDR-EX650, BlitzWolf BW-ES1, Sony MDR-XB50, Monster Beats iBeats, AUKEY EP-C3.

Mids & Vocals

The KZ ZS4 mids have strong mid-bass bleed and very warm sound. Male vocals will sound laid back when bass-intense tracks are being listened to but they will fight back when there is not too much mid-bass present on a song.

Higher mids are very crisp and can reach harshy peaks at times.

With an EQ there is a huge reduction of mid-bass bleed, giving the KZ ZS4 the chance to truly reveal their mids potential. After this EQ, their mids become very clear through out the entire range with clean lower mids, alive male vocals and conserving the crispness of their higher mids.

Highs & Treble

The KZ ZS4 highs are bright and resolve sufficient detail. These are not shy sounding regarding highs and treble and, as a result, can exhibit some piercing and sibilant highs.

An EQ makes their highs incredibly bright, detailed and open. Another range with outstanding response to EQ.

Sound Leak

The sound leaking out of the KZ ZS4 is more or less inline with most average earphones. Their leaking levels make them perfectly usable under normally noisy situations such as busy cities but will not be the best choice if planned to be used in places were quietness is required.

Sound Isolation

The sound isolation provided by the KZ ZS4 is exceptional, with a passive isolation way stronger than most earphones. By slightly dialing up the volume, they can reach an absolute level of isolation.

Comfort

The KZ ZS4 are extremely light and have identical housings as the KZ ZS3. The shape of the earpieces is not a very standard one but we find it to be outstandingly firm fitting and comfortable.

As the form factor is less universal than a classic bullet type earphone (or even of the KZ ZSA, KZ ZS6 and KZ ZS5), some will find it marvelously comfortable and others might find themselves with an incompatible fit. To be honest, only 1 out of 10 in our team had some kind of discomfort issues with the KZ ZS4.

Response to Equalization

The response to EQ was extremely efficient on mids and highs frequencies, revealing the true potential of the KZ ZS4 in these audio ranges – once their overly invasive bass is sedated.
