Meze 99 Neo
| Over-Ear | 40 mm Driver | Neodymium Magnet |
? Meze 99 Neo, a meticulously designed circumaural headphone with attractive aesthetics and solid build.
The Meze 99 Neo features 40 mm neodymium Mylar dynamic drivers, a sealed-back design, large over-ear fitting cups and a self-adjusting headband.
After testing the Meze 99 Classics and considering their compelling performance, we decided to test out and review the more affordable sibling, the Meze 99 Neo.
Size, construction quality and pieces like headband and structure are inline with the Meze 99 Classics. This means that most parts of the headphone are built in metal and with zinc alloy details.
Even the cups have the same shape, size and, efficient, two-axis movements of the 99 Classics, with the only difference being that the Meze 99 Neo have coal black textured earcups instead of wooden ones.
The Meze 99 Neo sits right below the Meze 99 Classics as what could be consider the 2nd top-tier headphone from the brand – at least until the upcoming Meze Empyrean and the Meze RAI Penta get released.
The cables of the 99 Neo are Kevlar OFC with a length of 1.5m and an inline microphone/remote. The cable is detachable with a 3.5mm connector on the audio output side and 2x mono 3.5mm connectors on the headphone/cup end.
You can buy the Meze 99 Neo in black color.

Bass & Sub Bass
The Meze 99 Neo bass is punchy and deep with an energetic tuning style that will make very happy people enjoying engaging lower frequencies.
Their bass response is able to cover any music genre without, ever, falling short of sub-bass nor of mid-bass. Still, despite their fun sound, they are not overly-boomy – expect a rich and full-bodied mid-bass with profound sub-bass.
Overall, their bass is very powerful and vivacious but does not turn into a bass-only sounding headphone.
Applying an EQ ther is a crazy deepening of their sub-bass and substantial extra mid-bass punch is added.

Mids & Vocals
The Meze 99 Neo mids have a very warm and cozy sound, with male vocals that do not sound distant. Due to their warmth-tuned mids there is some bleeding extending over lower mids but up to the right point.
Higher mids are smooth and fatigue-free, yet sufficiently crisp and clear.
People looking for a headphone with pleasant midrange that never becomes harsh and provide very warm vocals/mids will be glad with the Meze 99 Neo.
Using an EQ there is an impressive cleaning up of their lower mids with a huge reduction of mid-bass bleed. Furthermore, the upper midrange can be pushed for additional crispness and they will respond greatly, still without getting harsh.
Highs & Treble
The overall highs of the Meze 99 Neo resolve good detail and offer nice brightness as to become a headphone that does not sound dark nor gets fatiguing – piercing peaks are not usually present on the Meze 99 Neo.
Overall, their highs offer an enjoyable balance that does not turn into dark nor aggressive sound.
With an EQ, their highs gain noticeable extra brightness and become substantially more open, with the only cons of stronger sibilance
The sound leaking out of the Meze 99 Neo is substantially lower than on many average headphones. This will allow listeners to have a higher margin to crank up the volume before their sound could start to be, clearly, hearable by nearby people – they are not absolutely silent but will blend in during normal city situations.

The Meze 99 Neo have the exact same level of comfort and fit as the Meze 99 Classics, thanks to the inherited two-axis cups system, same large earcups design and PU leather earpads. Moreover, the very efficient, self-adjusting headband from the 99 Classics is also found on the Meze 99 Neo.
The clamping force of the Meze 99 Neo is secure and stable but not skull-crushing, this is aided by their large and soft earpads and the excellent self-adjusting headband.
