The Akko 5098B is part of the newest models from the brand, like the Akko MU02, but with more productivity and versatility usability in mind.

To date we have reviewed many Akko keyboards (Akko MU02, Akko MU01, Akko MOD007B HE, Akko MOD007PC 7th Anniversary, Akko ACR TOP40, Akko SPR75, Akko Sailor Moon Crystal 5087B v2) and none so far has disappointed the team nor failed to fulfill the expectations while testing them.

DESIGN

The “special” layout of the AKKO 5098B is not the classic 100% full-sized, but a size-optimized one referred as 1800 layout.

This 1800 layout reduces the overly large “wasted” space on the arrows/TKL part, compressing this space, replacing it with a screen and moving the TKL keys to the top of the numpad section.

On top of that, the AKKO 5098B does not sacrifice the numpad, offering the full-sized numbers and calc-related keys.

On the upper right corner of the case (above the numpad) you will find a rotary encoder.

If you get the Akko 5098B Ink Green model, you will find a green-centered design with a combination of green gamuts and light grey main keycaps.

The keyboard has a fairly larger than average display screen sitting between the main keys and the numpad and a horizontally placed strip LED right below it; this LED light works as a status indicator and also as a Caps Lock, Num Lock indicator by changing color.

A detail that you might not notice at first sight is that the 5098B also includes 2 RGB LED sidelights on the bottom lateral edges of the case.

DISPLAY SCREEN

As mentioned in the section above, the Akko 5098B includes a vertical display; this screen is also bigger than on many other keyboards, with a diagonal size of 1.47 inches.

The screen presents very good resolution, clarity and sharpness with easy readability of the fonts but the brand uses tiny fonts.

The screen will display some info such as:

• Connection mode
• Win/Mac mode
• Time
• Clock
• Akko logo
• Animated GIF
• Full customization, settings and light control through in-menu

A detail that we appreciate is that the screen configuration and uploading of custom GIF animations can be fully done from the same PC software used to program all the keyboard functions (Akko Cloud Driver) and does not need a separate secondary software to just control the display – a cumbersome detail that we have seen on other keyboards reviewed like the Skyloong GK104PRO, Skyloong GK87 Pro. 

On the other hand, we found that the large and neat screen does not make a smart use of its size and quality as does not show added information such as Caps Lock, Win Loc, Num Lock and does not offer added functions that we have found in other keyboards with screens like PC hardware stats, CPU, RAM usage and/or calculator.

CONSTRUCTION & BUILD

At first sight and impression, users will notice that 90% of the keyboard is made of ABS plastic but will feel some weight that usually is not typical of plastic keyboards; this is given to a combination of factors. The most evident one is a large aluminum alloy panel on the bottom case that acts as a counterweight and, also, due to a plethora of high-quality internal components.

Part of the excellent internal parts inside the 5098B, you will find a hot-swappable board, TPU double-shot stabilizers, gasket-mount design, PCB plate and a generous multi-layer of dampening dedicated sections including:

• PORON plate foam
• IXPE switch pad
• PET Pad
• Bottom foam
• EDPM foam

On the other hand, the knob is also made of plastic and not metal; which, personally, we would had prefer to find in a more solid metal build.

As with most Akko keyboards, the silicone, rubberized feet found on the bottom case of the Akko 5098B offer optimal anti-slip capability and sit among the best grippy feet when compared with other brands.

KEYCAPS

The Akko 5098B Ink Green comes pre-assembled with double-shot PBT keycaps that ensure fade-free, long-lasting build and a much thicker amount of PBT per keycap than on many other keycap sets.

These keycaps have ASA profile and nice, fine and subtle grit finish that feels gentle but grippy to the touch.

The type, layout and build of the keycaps set will defer according to the color/theme of the Akko 5098B purchased.

The rotary encoder has a vertical design and rotational movement, instead of the knobs found on many other keyboards (more inline with mainstream keyboards such as the Logitech G915 X, Razer BlackWidow, Razer DeathStalker keyboards and SteelSeries Apex Pro keyboards)

CONNECTIVITY

The Akko 5098B Ink Green and all of its variants are triple-mode keyboards accepting wired and wireless use.

Wired, the keyboard uses a detachable USB-C cable connection – port found on the rear edge of the case, more or less aligned with the position of the F4 and F5 keys.

Wirelessly, the 5098B can be used through a Bluetooth 5.0 connection that offers 3 independent pairing slot or through the better performing 2.4G wireless connection with the included dongle.

The selection of the connection mode is done through the UI of the display screen and navigation with the rotary encoder.

TYPING

The superb internal components, switches and keycaps of the Akko 5098B make it a joy to type with, while the handy layout and added keys make it a perfect main keyboard and daily driver.

GAMING

As we mention every time, we do not love large keyboards for gaming but this is our personal preference as many pro-gamers love full-sized keyboard for their competitive gaming.

Nonetheless, the 5098B does offer some gaming welcomed features such as:

• 1000Hz polling rate
• NKRO

PRODUCTIVITY

Productivity and office tasks are part of the best coverage of the Akko 5098B with its optimized 1800 layout and the inclusion of features like:

• F number row
• Arrow keys
• Display screen

TABLET/MOBILE

Being a Bluetooth enabled keyboard and offering a knob, screen and full reprogramability through software, this Akko keyboard can be a functional companion for mobile setups but the large size and weight might not be the wisest choice if you are hit and run worker with a mobile system.

The keyboard has full RGB, south-facing LED lights that showed a stronger brightness and better visibility than many other south-facing keyboards (for example the Akko MU02)

The sidelights with, also, full RGB access and independent customization from the main board LEDs is another well-received implementation from the brand.

SOUND

The AKKO 5098B Ink Green with Kailh Ice Cream switches presented a delightfully refined poppy-thocky sound with no resonance nor pinging.

To be honest, it is not that common to find keyboards able to provide this sound quality in a similar price range and with plastic shells but it should not be that much of a surprise seeing all the premium internal components and sound dampening layers inside this Akko keyboard.

On the other hand, the AKKO 5098B presents a slight lack of lube on the stabilizers of the spacebar, thus showing a bit of rattling noise but that can be instantly removed by adding some lube to it – this is not unique to this model as we have seen the exact same “issue” with many Akko keyboards reviewed so far (AKKO MU01, AKKO MOD007B, AKKO MOD007 Anniversary Edition), except for the AKKO MU02 and AKKO ACR TOP40 – to be fair, though, this is subtle and not obscenely lacking in lube quantity.

The rest of the plate-mounted stabilizers on the keyboard, instead, came perfectly lubed from factory.

BATTERY

Unlike many other large-sized keyboards, Akko has been smart by placing a beefy 8000mAh battery inside of the 5098B, allowing a much longer runtime and power to fully utilize the RGB back and side light and also the display screen, without having to worry about the battery.

Also, the brand has equipped the unit with 2A fast charging capability, so the typical endless hours needed to charge your keyboard is not an issue with the Akko 5098B.
