ACCESSORIES & PACKAGING

The Epomaker CarbonX Mouse comes inside a nice packaging with soft protective foam.

With the mouse you also get:

• Skates replacements

D

DESIGN
gramophone-256605/5

Of course the first thing that you notice with the Epomaker CarbonX is the special hollowed case, this is a style of gaming mice that benefit from a much lighter structure but also a sweat-less vented design.

The hollowed case is found on the main upper case, the lower section of the 2 main clickers and on all the bottom case.

We have seen plenty of gaming peripherals adopting the all-black theme as well as many keyboards too and many (if not most) of the times they end up looking dull and without personality.

The Epomaker CarbonX Mouse is part of the all-black devices but the brand truly nailed the aesthetics with a final effect that makes it look premium and classy instead of boring and plain flat black.

In part this is by the use of different shades of black throughout the details found in the mouse and the decision to make opt for a semi-matte finish instead of a fully matte or shiny one.

Another well-achieved aesthetic is the fact that the surface of the case is not a finger-print magnet like most black colored devices.

Between the lower edge of the connecting section between the 2 main clickers, there is a tiny multi-color LED light that serves to get brief status information such as DPI, charging and Bluetooth pairing – the light usually turns on for a brief moment and then turns off. If you wish you can change this light effect to remain always on or breath (through the software)

On the bottom plate of the case you can find a 3-way switch to select the connection mode and a button that is used to select the DPI presets. A detail that we noticed is that when looking at the lower edge section of the bottom case there is a cutout zone that clearly seems to be a slot for a standard-shaped USB dongle; but this mouse does not include this type of dongle and has a large pill-alike dongle – maybe the brand planned a standard USB styled dongle and then changed their decision or it could be a sign that a Epomaker CarbonX Lite version could be on their release schedule.

CONSTRUCTION & BUILD
gramophone-256605/5

Thanks to the “naked” hollowed case, there is no guess work or disassembly needed to see and fin the internals of the mouse.

We mentioned the black theme of the Epomaker CarbonX but what you might not know is that the naming “CarbonX” also refers to the real carbon fiber build material used for the case of this mouse.

Carbon fiber is an unique material that provides highly durable and rugged properties but with the particularity of being remarkably light weighted.

Internally, the mouse if powered by an all-time renowned PAW3395 sensor and Nordic MCU to provide high-performing standards for, even, competitive gaming.

Of course, and as expected, there are no fragile, wobbly nor cheap feeling details in this mouse; you will not feel nor hear any cracking nor screaking section.

SW

SWITCHES

The mouse comes equipped with optical switches by Omron, there is no mention to the exact model of these Omron switches but they feel and perform impressively well.

On top of that, the main clickers (which are the ones using the optical Omron switches) presented ultra-fast clickabilty with nearly no pre-travel – a bit of pre-travel is more noticeable on the 2 side buttons.

The switches respond with clicky and tactile feedback with a perfect balance of weight and resistance to improve their feel and performance.

CON

CONNECTIVITY
gramophone-256605/5

The CarbonX is a tri-mode mouse that is able to be used wired (detachable USB-C) and wirelessly.

When in wireless mode, you can opt to connect through a Bluetooth or 2.4G wireless connection; if you choose BT your polling rate is limited to 125Hz and 10ms latency while on 2.4G (with the dongle) you can enable a polling rate of 8000Hz and 0.4ms of latency (0.35ms in wired mode)

As you can see, the dongle has a white-strip on the upper half of its shell, this is a backlit LED section that will turn on when the mouse if connected in 2.4G wireless mode with the dongle.

CU

CUSTOMIZATION
gramophone-256604.5/5

Through the online software, users gain access to customizations such as:

• Button remapping
• Debounce time
• Macros
• DPI stages personalization (7)
• Polling rate (from 125Hz up to 8000Hz)
• Sensor settings
• Firmware updates
• Profile creations (4)

All of the 5 buttons are programmable with different functions than the default ones or even with custom macros.

S

SOUND
gramophone-256604.75/5

Most of our editors agreed that the Epomaker CarbonX Mouse exhibited by far the best sound of all the dozens of gaming mice that we have reviewed.

The main clickers and the side buttons share a coherent loudness and pitch with a lowered toned and much less obnoxiously loud click than most other gaming mice.

The button of the wheel does have a more “typical” clicky and higher pitched sound.

The only detail regarding the sound was that the wheel showed a bit of screeching when rotating upwards – downwards the scroll wheel is completely silent.

SF

SOFTWARE
gramophone-256604.25/5

The Epomaker CarbonX does not need to install any software to access the full programmability and customization offered; instead, the mouse uses an online software that works directly from any web browser – much like VIA is for compatible QMK keyboards.

This gives the main benefit of not needing to install nor having any background running software to program and use the customizations of your mouse – some user though fear that the service goes offline and you lose access to your software customization potential.

P

PERFORMANCE
gramophone-256605/5

Regarding the “sliding” potential and friction of the CarbonX, the mouse is fast enough but the pre-installed skates did make it to show a bit less of travel distance than other gaming mice with the same input force applied on them. This is not a less-performing detail but a different “flavor” that can fit each users in a different manner and some prefer it for better control – you can always replace the skates with your preferred ones.

Holding and using the Epomaker CarbonX was truly enjoyable with its featherlight weight and carbon fiber construction.

Specs like its 8000Hz of polling rate, 30K DPI, 0.35ms latency, 20000FPS, 50g acceleration and 750 IPS add up to a top-class gaming mouse that can withstand any competitive gaming session with vast superiority. It is worth mentioning that the mouse connects by default in 1000Hz and you need to change the polling rate to 8000Hz through the online software.

Moreover, the optical switches, main clickers and side switches were extremely responsive and easy to spam smash whenever wanted.

A surprising fact that we discovered was that the brand declares a weight of 50g while the real weight is even lower (46.43g), an odd approach by Epomaker as some brands do the totally opposite stating lower weight than the true weight.

B

BATTERY
gramophone-256604/5

The battery inside the Epomaker CarbonX has a capacity of 300mAh which 40% less than what we saw on recent models from the brand. This is serving the CarbonX to keep a lighter weight while still providing sufficiently long runtimes.
