EPOMAKER QK108

Lately, Epomaker has been introducing several full-sized keyboards; at a faster pace than we have seen them doing it in the past – it might be an increasing market request for this all-time classic layout.

The Epomaker QK108 joins their catalog under the QK series, being this one of the smallest series from the brand as previously it only included the QK81 and no other model – there are other brands that, oddly, have also series named QK; like the CIDOO QK61.

Due to the inclusion of a knob and display screen, combined with the 100% ANSI US layout; the Epomaker QK108 shares some design and style elements of the Epomaker x AULA F108 series (mostly the PRO) but with a totally different theme. The QK108 has light-colored visuals that extend from the all-white case up to the full keycaps set based mostly on white keycaps and some accents in pastel light-blue and grey.

A difference that sets it apart from the AULA and from most other keyboards, is 2 pill-alike buttons sitting to the left of the display screen. These 2 buttons have been pre-programmed to offer a dedicated button for controlling the south-facing RGB LEDs of the board and another one to turn on/off the display screen – a smart 2nd button if you are looking to save battery.

Also, to the left of the buttons there are 2 status LED light indicators for quick insights like battery status and charging.

On the bottom the keyboard is equipped with 2 kickstands that are adjustable and one hiding a storage slot for the wireless dongle.

The display of the QK108 is very similar to the ones of the recently reviewed TH99 PRO, TH108 PRO and also to the K761 PRO and K762 PRO. The size of screen is on the small side but with useful info being displayed and, even, access to upload animated GIF.

Probably, many users might have preferred to have a wider/bigger displays screen size than the 2 buttons and LED lights next to it.

CONSTRUCTION & BUILD

The shell of the Epomaker is based on ABS plastics but it does not cheap. More important are the quality of the internals that include a hot-swappable board with gasket mounted design, PC plate, plate-mounted stabs and a quint-layered system specialized in sound enhancing and sound dampening.

In addition to this, the keyboard is QMK/VIA compatible, so all programming is done through the flexible VIA web-based system and does not require additional software to be installed on your PC. On this matter, it is worth mentioning, though, that as with all VIA keyboards, there is no part of VIA that allows to control and customize the display screen; so, this needs to be done with a 2nd “image tool” software that you need to download and run.

The keycaps set included with the Epomaker QK108 has Cherry profile and have excellent quality thanks to the dye-sub PBT material used for their construction; which ensures non-fading printings.

The knob has nice tactile and silent feedback while not being overly loose nor too tight to make you fight against its weight to be rotated.

As nearly all latest keyboards from Epomaker, the QK108 can be used wired or wirelessly and is based on a tri-mode system.

This system allows the keyboard to use Bluetooth, 2.4G or detachable USB-C connections.

Moreover, all 3 connectivity options offer respectable specs like 1000Hz polling rate (wired and 2.4G) and 3ms latency (wired) – 5ms in 2.4G and 15ms, 125Hz for BT.

The QK108 exhibited a clacky-poppy sound profile with a clean overall personality.

On top of that, the keyboard did not show problems with echo, resonance nor hollow sounds while still being able to be ping-free.

The stabilizers came perfectly lubed from factory making them responsive and showing no traces of rattling noises.

The Epomaker QK108 has, literally, double the battery capacity of most average keyboards; including inside not one but two 4000mAh rechargeable batteries – which we consider a might more coherent battery size for this type of keyboard.
