In the past we have reviewed a sibling of the Ajazz AK820 Max, the Ajazz AK820 Pro which proved to be an excellent bang for buck keyboard with unexpectedly good qualities.

As the brand states that the Ajazz AK820 Max is an evolved and upgraded version of the Ajazz AK820 Pro, we will see if the AK820 Max is able to match the reputation of the AK820 series.

Ajazz packaging is always a bit simple with a thin cardboard box; as expected, the Ajazz AK820 MAX has the same carboard packaging that we have seen on all previously reviewed Ajazz keyboards.

Inside you will also get:

DESIGN

The Ajazz AK820 Max is a 75% mechanical keyboard with 82 keys and a knob.

On the right section of the keyboard you will see a column of 3 LED indicator lights for Caps Lock, Win Lock and battery status insights.

Also, on the upper corner you can find a big metal knob for volume control but unlike the Ajazz AK820 Pro, the Max version does not include a display screen.

Thanks to its all-black case and special keycaps, the AK820 Max has a very polished and “stealthy” aesthetic that makes it stand out from the typical looks of mechanical keyboards.

On the bottom you will find a 2-step adjustable feet and the wireless dongle hidden in a dedicated storage compartment next to one of the bottom feet.

The Ajazz AK820 Max is available in 2 different colors:

CONSTRUCTION & BUILD

Thanks to an ABS case, the Ajazz AK820 Max is remarkably light-weighted but still feeling more rugged than other plastic keyboards.

Despite of its light weight, the AK820 Max holds inside a vast amount of high-quality elements such as a gasket-mounted design, plate-mounted stabilizers, a flex-cut hot-swappable board, a flex-cut FR4 plate and 3 layers of dampening that include 2x cotton layers, a IXPE switch pad and a silicone base layer.

Thanks to its hot-swappable PCB, the Ajazz AK820 Max is compatible with most mechanical switches on the market, allowing them to be changed without any soldering involved.

KEYCAPS

Both color versions of the Ajazz AK820 Max come with side-printed PBT keycaps, which is a welcomed detail as these side-printed keycaps are excellent.

With side-printed keycaps you have to be aware that the fonts are only visible while the backlight of the keyboards is turned on.

We have to admit that we like and always have liked this style of keycaps on also other keyboards reviewed in the past using them (Keydous NJ98, MCHOSE K99, Skyloong GK104 Pro), as it gives to the unit an unique look but also are unexpectedly productive (as long as you keep the LEDs on)

The knob is fully made of metal and offers one of the best rotational movement:resistance ratio that we have seen, allowing it to be rotated with single finger from the edge of the case, yet offering fine per-step control with per-notch tactile but silent feedback.

SWITCHES

To be honest, when we saw “Sea Salt switches”, we immediately associated with Epomaker Sea Salt Silent switches (a mechanical switch model that we have reviewed in several keyboards) but we were wrong, the Sea Salt switches inside the Ajazz AK820 Max are similarly named but are actually from Ajazz brand – thus, these are Ajazz Sea Salt switches.

Furthermore, by specs, these are not silent switches like the ones from Epomaker; the Ajazz Sea Salt are “normal” linear mechanical switches.

The switches are a bit heavier than many popular linear switches but not excessively as to become fatiguing, instead, we found them to be comfortable to get error-free typing and a good multi-purpose balance.

The Ajazz AK820 Max can be used wired or wirelessly; wirelessly users can opt to make use of its Bluetooth connection or pair it with the bundled dongle to benefit from better performing 2.4G wireless connection.

Wired, the keyboard has a detachable USB-C connecting design, thus prolonging the lifespan of the keyboard.

To select the working mode, users can reach 2 switches on the back edge of the case; one is used to set the keyboard in Mac or Windows mode and the other one to select the connection mode to BT, 2.4G or wired – both switches are very well-labeled.

The south-facing LED on the board of the Ajazz AK820 Max are a key component to correctly backlit the superb side-printed (shine-through) keycaps of this Ajazz keyboard.

If you have never owned this kind of keycaps, you will be amazed by the special effect it generates and the uniqueness of an eye-candy but not tacky final effect that they produce.

The Ajazz AK820 Max is explicitly rated by the brand as the upgraded version of the Ajazz AK820 Pro.

To be honest, we do not know why the brand said this as the Ajazz AK820 Max vs Ajazz AK820 Pro are far from being even slightly similar in the sound department.

The Ajazz AK820 Pro had thock characteristics while the Ajazz AK820 Max has more of a semi-silent sound, with a stealthy thock-ish quiet profile.

If you do not get confused with your expectations, thinking that it will resemble the AK820 Pro, the AK820 Max has a nicely polished sound with a stealthy personality.

If we had to point out some weaker details, the stabs of the spacebar and right shift of our unit could benefit from a bit of extra lube but the rest of the stabilizers where perfectly lubed from factory, matching the semi-silent profile of the switches.

SOFTWARE

The software for the Ajazz AK820 Max is similar to other Ajazz keyboard, having access to all customizations, programming, macros and lighting controls.

On top of that, the software shows live on-screen previews of the lighting presets.

The drawback, though, is that Ajazz keyboards need the installation of a separate software for each keyboard version instead of having an universal hub for all models. If you have many Ajazz keyboard models you will have to install one software per keyboards model.
