UGEE UE16 Drawing Monitor
| Drawing Monitor / Pen Display | Full HD 1080p | 143% sRGB | 16K pressure |
UGEE UE16 Drawing Monitor, the newest and largest pen display/drawing monitor from UGEE.
The UGEE UE16 joins the latest UE series following the UGEE UE12 Plus (which we reviewed long time ago), a new series with a whole makeover over the design and ergonomics.
UGEE keeps expanding their catalog of pen-enabled drawing monitors with the introduction of the UGEE UE16, yet still conserving the accessible price typical of UGEE products.

D
DESIGN
4.25/5
When reviewing the smaller UGEE UE12 Plus we mentioned that we would had loved to see the same design and express keys design being released in a bigger pen display model; many months later, we seem to have our wishes fulfilled with this brand new UGEE UE16 as it is a full, larger adaptation of the smaller UE12 series but with a more usable, longer and wider, 15.4″ panel size.
In fact, the right front panel of the UGEE UE16 holds 9 buttons used as express keys with the same kind of nice alternated, rounded and “split-pill” concave and convex styled shape and a donut-alike wheel.
The different shaped buttons become extremely handy to recognize them by touch without having to look at them – a daily working feature that lacks in other pen devices like the HUION Inspiroy Giano and better implemented than the touch buttons of the GAMON PD2200 and the physical buttons of the HUION KAMVAS Pro 16.
We were also glad to discover that all the express keys automatically reprogrammed to reflect the correct order when rotating the UE16 for left-handed use.
B
BUILD
4.25/5
The UGEE UE16 is a light-weighted mid-sized pen display when directly compared with other similar products; this is in part thanks to an all-plastic shell with no metal nor glass used for the construction of the device.
For users prioritizing portability and a lighter core, the UE16 could be a better fit than heavier, tank-alike alternatives. To be more precise, the UGEE UE16, weights 1.28kg and has a thickness of 13mm.
From an usability perspective, the new tablet stand has some definite pros and some cons. The new design offers a full metal build and a very smart foldable design that makes it tiny and super portable when folded while the adjustable system allows it to expand laterally to be used even as a smartphone, mobile tablet or laptop stand. In addition to this, the stands has plenty of fixed angled positions to accommodate to each user’s preference.
On the negative side, the stand feels a bit less stable and slightly wobbly when handheld but as soon as you place the UGEE UE16 on it, all the sections of the stand fit and settle securely in place making any shaky and wobbly traces disappear.
DC
DISPLAY SCREEN
4.25/5
The UGEE UE16 is equipped with a 1080p full-HD IPS panel that seems to have inherited the quality seen on the UGEE U1600 and, now, covering 143% of sRGB color gamut – other specs include 16.7 million color and 8-bit color depth.
In fact, the panel of the UGEE UE16 sits among the best calibrated color-wise and has better full-lamination with the panel being seen on the same level as the front plastic cover and top layer; instead of the submerged panel positioning seen on other direct competitors.
The screen has an efficient anti-glare cover that keeps glare under control and avoid any sharp mirror-like reflections from disturbing.
On top of that, the finish of the screen has a bit of a paper-like feel when using the pen but it feels, smoother, more fluid and less gritty than on other pen displays – on the other hand if you are an artist that prefers a more pronounced paper emulation, the UGEE will fall short in this department.
In addition to the express keys, the UGEE UE16 has 3 additional buttons sitting on the left edge of the shell, these are 1 power button and the remaining 2 working as dedicated brightness control buttons and also allow the access to an in-menu quick switching color-space mode – users can choose sRGB, Adobe RGB, DCI-P3, Black & White or Custom calibration.
The new UGEE UE16 includes a desktop shortcut floating window that can be called by pressing one of the express keys. This is something that is available in other pen displays from competitors but the one from UGEE is particularly handy as it can be designed to include from 1 to 16 shortcuts and can be chosen to have 3 sizes in 1x, 1.5x or 2x – beware, though, that if you have a Scale set in the Display settings of Windows, it will affect the size of this Shortcuts floating window from UGEE.
An additional feature that most competitors do not include is on-screen notifications of the express key function pressed as well as the mode set for the roller/wheel. This can seem like a trivial feature but, instead, is a productivity booster as you no longer need to memorize which express key function and never guess which current function is the roller set.
On the other hand, unlike nearly every other pen display that we have reviewed, the UGEE UE16 does not offer a smooth transition from pen display mode to tablet mode. On all other competitors, the switching process requires to simply turn off the panel, while on the UGEE you will need to follow some extra, less intuitive steps to be able to use the UE16 in tablet mode.
Nonetheless, the UE16 can be used as a pen tablet for an external monitor, as long as you keep the display of the UE16 turned on.
P
PEN
4/5
This new drawing monitor from UGEE also introduces a new model of pen bundled with the device.
The new pen of the UGEE UE16 is called U-Pencil, with the same EMR, battery-less, 16K pen pressure and tilt sensitive seen on the UE12 but with a different, larger button design, smoother, fully rounded body (resembling a classic pencil) and a slightly more confident weight.
Of course, the pen of the UGEE is ergonomically not up to the level of the pens that comes bundled with every single pen display that we have reviewed from HUION, Gaomon and VEIKK; as the one from the competitors have a thicker body, better shape overall to fit more comfortably, better buttons and rubberized grips – all features that the pen from UGEE lacks.
As the older pen, the new U-Pencil also includes 2 programmable buttons and both front nib and rear erasers that are pressure sensitive – compared with the old model, the brand has made the rear eraser less stiff.
C
CONNECTIVITY
4/5
The UGEE UE16 has 2 USB-C connectors, these are meant for the 2 connectivity systems offered by the drawing monitor.
One is used for a 3-in-1 cable connection that has a USB-A for I/O, USB-A for power and HDMI for video signal; while the other USB-C port is a full-featured single USB-C to USB-C connection that does not require the use of any additional ports or external power – you need to have a PC/device compatible with full-featured USB-C ports.
Unfortunately, though, our unit frequently showed some flickering when used with the full-featured USB-C connection; which was only solved by unplugging and re-plugging the device at least 3 times – after which, the unit worked as intended.
By having these 2 connection options, users can expand the compatibility and versatility of the UGEE UE16 to use it with newer or older devices and even enabling the use with smartphones and tablets for mobile systems.
PERFORMANCE
4.25/5
Pressure & Tilt
As seen on all recent pen displays from UGEE, the UGEE UE16 has the same detailed pen pressure performance.
Moreover, the pressure curve set by default is well tuned to provide a natural operation that pickups every range of pressure transitions applied and even fast “tapping” and strokes without (usually) missing inputs.
If you want to adjust the curve response, it can be done through UGEE’s software by selecting one of the 7 pre-made presets or creating a custom curve.
Also, the drawing monitor detected up to 60 degrees of tilt by the U-Pencil (on compatible software)
Lag
The UGEE UE16 was snappy and responsive in all pen inputs and even following the pen around as a mouse cursor.
Unlike some other budget pen displays, the UGEE UE16 has good control of lag and delay.
Jitter
Another improvement of the UGEE UE16 seems to be the efficiency of its jitter control, as the new model exhibited slightly less noticeable jitter (than older devices) when tracing diagonal lines supported by a physical ruler and tracing it either slow or fast.
On the other hand, jitter is present and will affect diagonal lines for either precision work like engineering, architecture, industrial design and even everyday drawing of shapes or elements like houses, etc.
Tracking / Parallax
Out of the box and without any manual calibration, the UGEE UE16 showed good tracking and low parallax; the unit presented good precision across nearly all the panel area and on 2 of 4 corners – the other 2 corners exhibited a some parallax but was within the tolerance of its listed spec sheet.
Comparison
As you can see from the photos below, the UGEE UE16 vs UGEE U1600 shows a clear difference in size, as the UE16 extends its footprint by the express keys.
What you cannot see from the photos, though, is that despite being larger, the UE16 feels lighter and thinner than the U1600.
