Twistura Woodnote
| In-Ear | Wood diaphragm |
Twistura Woodnote, a brand new IEM from a freshly born brand: Twistura.
We have reviewed many wood headphones in the past (both in-ears and over-ears) but this is the first time that the wood part of the device is not the shells/ear cups but the diaphragm itself.
Wood usually gives a characteristic warmth and bass flavor to sound, we will see if the Twistura are truly different from the rest.
Apart from this, the earphones have aluminum alloy shells and make use of a 10mm single-driver, dual-magnet configuration.
As expected by a IEM of this price range, the cable is detachable and of bi-pin type; which is one of the most diffused cable systems.
We usually do not go to deep into the bundled cables but Twistura has gone a step ahead the competition, including a quality of cable that most users buy apart. The cable is a mixed copper, thick and reinforced one that has a replaceable plug system where you can simply unscrew and replace the connector end with the bundled 3.5mm or 4.4mm balanced plug.

B
Bass & Sub Bass
You might have noticed the inclusion of nozzles with the Twistura Woodnote, this is because the IEM supports switching nozzles to achieve different tunings that are promised to offer: Vocal enhancement (gold nozzle), Instrumental enhancement (silver nozzle), standard tuning (dark silver nozzle).
Earphones with replaceable filter tuning nozzles is not a revolutionary new invention from Twistura as this is something that has been on the market for decades already but most of the times, the nozzles are pure gimmick or offer little to no significant audio difference. We will see if the Twistura do actually provide a net difference with their nozzles.
Out of the box you will get the Twistura Woodnote with the Vocal enhance nozzles already installed but we will center the review mostly over the sound of this IEM using the standard nozzle; which by the way we consider the much better sounding of all 3 – scores are based on the standard nozzle too.
Said so, with the standard nozzles, the Twistura Woodnote responded with a respectable bass extension where from mid to sub-bass notes the earphone did not fall short of covering and reproducing every range with zero empty notes.
Nonetheless, the bass of the Woodnote can be rated as more on the conservative side than on the punchy and skull crushing one.
To be more precise, mid-bass and sub-bass are accurately tuned to provide sufficient depth without getting overly rumbly and alive but not too loose as to eat up the whole sound signature.
With the instrument and vocal nozzles, there is a palpable “brake” applied over the bass intensity, making it less punchy and not as deep, yet not anemic. The main problem is that the upper end of the sound signature overshadows the bass presence with these 2 nozzles.

Mids & Vocals
With the standard nozzles, the lower midrange shows a well-balanced amount of warmth without drowning lower mids and deep pitched vocals.
On the other hand, male vocals can tend to feel a bit laid back and struggle to compete with the much more forward upper midrange.
Regarding those, the up end of the midrange is significantly more proficient cutting through and arising in the general sound signature but can easily turn into borderline harsh peaks and slightly shouty female vocals from time to time.
Both vocal and instrument enhancing nozzles showed a clear effect over the midrange, eliminating all traces of mid-bass bleed and removing the laid back effect of male vocals that was present with the standard nozzle.
The trade up is an even more intense upper midrange that makes them too harsh for our taste.
Better tracks with good mixing and mastering might combine all the characteristic of the Twistura into a good sounding midrange.

H
Highs & Treble
With the standard nozzles, highs and treble weight well their spikes and dips creating a flavor that gets apart from dark and muffled highs.
Despite this, we would not rate the Twistura as an award-winning micro-detail resolving IEM.
Worth mentioning too that sibilance and piercing highs were well controlled.
When using either the instrument or vocal nozzles, the highs and treble see a huge boost (like what happened with the upper mids). This makes them overall much brighter and give a feel of more airy openness but, once again, they transform into way too forward and fatiguing sound with piercing spikes that are not pleasant.
To be honest, the difference between the instrument enhancing and vocal enhancing nozzles is nothing to write home about, they are way more similar than different overall.
Said so, the difference between these 2 and the standard nozzle is another story. This is where you really get a true retuning of the sound signature and no gimmick.

Sound Leak
If you like listening to music at intense volume levels and during daily commuting, you will not be too happy to know that the Woodnote leak significantly more sound than most normal headphones.

SI
Sound Isolation
The passive isolation provided by the Twistura is more or less in line with average closed back headphones. You will perceive some partial isolation but you will still hear your surroundings.

Comfort
The rounded shapes of the earpieces and plenty of included eartips make this IEM a comfortable one to wear for normal runtimes.
Do consider that their size is about average and not the smallest earphones that you can buy.

EQ
Response to Equalization
Apart from the tuning nozzles, the Twistura Woodnote responded remarkably well to custom equalization in both paths to drastically retune the original sound signature or even fine tuning to “fix” some of the weak spots that are present out of the box
