AKG K240 STUDIO
| Over-Ear | Open-Back |
AKG K240 STUDIO, one of the most affordable open-back headphones from AKG.
The AKG K240 STUDIO features a single dynamic driver per side with a diameter of 30mm and Varimotion diaphragm.
AKG is a massive headphones manufacturer and part of the HARMAN Group, with plenty of iconic and classic headphones such as the AKG K701, AKG K712 PRO and the AKG K240 STUDIO as well.
The brand ranks the AKG K240 STUDIO as a professional model for mixing, mastering and playback with inherited specs of their high-tier line – like their patented Varimotion diaphragms.
The AKG K240 has been on the market as a budget industry standard for more than 30 years; through out the years many variations of the AKG K240 have been created and even lately the version 2 was released under the line. Among the many sub-versions of AKG K240 you could find the:
- AKG K240 – some refer it as AKG K240 Sextett, first model from mid 1970’s with silver details and a perforated headband
- AKG K240 DF Studio-Monitor – all black, 600 ohm, DF stands for diffuse-field equalized, model designed to German Institute for Radio Technology standards, discontinued model
- AKG K240 Monitor – golden details, 600 ohm, discontinued model
- AKG K240 STUDIO (Made in Austria) – 55 ohm model made in Austria, later replaced by an almost identical looking model but made in China
- AKG K240 STUDIO (Made in China) – 55 ohm current K240 Studio model
- AKG K240 MK II – latest model with silver and blue details
Despite that the MK II model has been released, the AKG K240 STUDIO is still a current model in production that has not been discontinued nor replaced by the AKG K240 MK II.

Tests & Scores
A
Accessories & Packaging
The AKG K240 STUDIO comes bundled, only, with a detachable cable and a screw-on 1/4″ plug adapter.
The packaging holding the unit is a square box with a fair size as to fit the headphone inside without constrictions.

Cable
The cable of the AKG K240 STUDIO is single-sided and rounded with a rubberized finish and a length of 3 meters.
A very rare feature of this headphone is that, despite being a budget-friendly model, is offers a detachable cable design with a nice mini XLR (3-pin) connector.
Moreover, the cable is generously thick without much to envy from the cables of other classic headphones such as the:
- AKG K702
- AKG K701
- SONY MDR-7506
- beyerdynamic DT 990
- beyerdynamic DT 770

Construction Quality and Build
The AKG K240 STUDIO is nicely built, with a combination of plastic and metal and a style that resembles it’s bigger siblings.
On the other hand, the cheaper price of this model does sacrifices a bit on the robustness and the relation plastic-metal used in comparison to the AKG K701 and AKG K712 PRO (for example)
If you have been into super budget Asian headphones for a while, you might have noticed that the AKG K240 is such a popular headphone that Superlux made one model that looks extremely similar, the Superlux HD681.
B
Bass & Sub Bass
The AKG K240 STUDIO offer full bass with punchy mid-bass and a noticeably deep sub-bass for an open-back headphone.
In addition to this, their bass is full-bodied but not boomy, nor overdone and at the same time is not anemic nor thin, by any means.
Users should expect a balanced bass that will still not fall-short of fun nor body.
Using an EQ there was an impressive addition of sub-bass depth and a much more prominent mid-bass punch.

M
Mids & Vocals
The AKG K240 STUDIO has warm mids with gentle and cozy vocals, yet some mid-bass bleed is perceptible adding a tint of congestion.
Nonetheless, their vocals sound clear, alive and not distant – even male vocals.
Higher mids have nice crispness and are not “muted” nor rolled-off, covering instruments with upper mids notes and female vocals sitting in these ranges.
Overall, their mids are not aggressive nor harsh and tuned towards a cozy sound signature, that results in a real pleasure to listen to.
With an EQ, higher mids can be pushed for a much more crispier sound and lower vocals can be cleared up significantly without getting boxy nor tinny sounds.

Highs & Treble
The AKG K240 STUDIO resolve a nice amount of detail and offer substantial brightness for the warmth offered.
Their highs are still not super bright nor forward but by any means recessed nor dark.
Moreover, piercing highs are not an issue with the AKG K240 Studio, while sibilance might mildly appear from time to time.
Overall, their highs share the same personality of their mids, a gentle and extremely pleasant sound.
Applying an EQ, the AKG K240 can provide a superbly brighter and much more detailed sound, still piercing highs do not arise but you can expect more frequent sibilance.

Sound Leak
The sound leaking out of the AKG K240 is much less audible than most other open-back headphones – indeed, this is actually a semi open-back headphone and not a fully open-back headphone.

Sound Isolation
AKG rates the AKG K240 Studio as a semi-open headphone but they are not far from many other open-back headphones regarding isolation – and general performance, as well.
Users should expect little to negligible isolation when wearing the AKG K240 STUDIO.
We have standardized this section’s scores as higher score=higher isolation, which is irrelevant for semi-open and open-back headphones, consequently we never average nor consider the Sound Leak and Sound Isolation scores for open and semi-open headphones.

C
Comfort
The famous AKG’s self-adjusting headband (classic from AKG professional headphones) is used on the AKG K240, which provides an excellent fit and comfort and a wide resting area that is gentle to the upper head.
The metal headband structure adds a stable but non-fatiguing clamping force that can adapt to any head size. Additionally, this minimalist headband design helps out keeping the headphone light-weighted.
The only drawback on the AKG K240 is the material of the earpads, which is stiffed and less-adaptable than the soft earpads of the AKG K550 series or the velour earpads of the AKG K7XX line and the AKG K612 PRO.
