The Epomaker Hack 59 is born and designed from its core as a gaming keyboard to fulfill the requirements of serious gamers but with a retail price that is remarkably cheap.

When receiving the Epomaker Hack 59 we were gladly surprised that despite being a budget model, the brand decided to ship the model in the same, much better packaging that we have also seen used for the Epomaker P87 and Epomaker Alice 66.

DESIGN

The Epomaker Hack 59 is a compact keyboard with a 60% layout but with 59 keys and no additional knobs nor media encoders.

As the keyboard was intended for gaming tasks, the model lacks some extra keys and details that are found in both 60% or also larger keyboards; for example: arrow keys.

The overall look and design of the Hack 59 is still tacky and screaming “GAMER” all around as it has a more discrete and conservative flavor in color, keycaps theme and lighting design.

In fact, the keyboard offers south-facing RGB lights and only and additional thin and small vertical strip light on the top left corner of the upper case area.

The rest of the design elements show a lightly gaming-theme set, a back edge with a connection switch, USB-C connector and dongle slot; while the bottom sports 4 nice rubberized feet and a 2-position adjustable kickstand.

An unfortunate detail about this gaming mechanical keyboard is that the brand does not offer any other colors and/or themes for this model.

CONSTRUCTION & BUILD

The Epomaker Hack 59 is part of the plastic constructed keyboards from the brand but unlike what we might had prefer for other model from the brand, we did find the plastic build to be a welcomed feature of this type of keyboard that can be better adapted for gaming and mobile use.

In spite of not being made of metal keyboard like the Epomaker Tide75, Akko SPR75, Leobog Hi75, Epomaker P87 and Feker Galaxy 80; the ABS plastic used in the Epomaker Hack 59 feels much better than what we have seen in other more expensive plastic keyboards such as some Ajazz keyboard, most mainstream keyboards from Razer and Logitech and the Fantech MaxFit Air99 (which even has some metal)

An unexpected feature of this gaming keyboard was the fact that internally it sports much more premium components that the price could suggest; including:

• Hot-swappable board – no soldering needed to change switches

• 5-layer dampening: Poron Sandwich Foam, IXPE Switch Pad, Sound Enhancement Pad, Poron Switch Socket Pad, Bottom Silicone Pad
• Gasket-mount design
• Plate-mount stabilizers
• Polycarbonate plate

As a gaming-designed keyboard we liked the fact that the keycaps did not felt slippery but, still, had a fully smooth, non-textured finish – that could otherwise induce some fatigue or discomfort after long gaming sessions.

The keycaps come in one option only with a gaming theme, PBT construction, dye-sub and Cherry profile.

Even as a typing keycap set, the gaming theme is not overly gamer and unreadable as it is, actually, more conservative than other non-gaming keyboards throughout the design of the main keys and fonts.

SWITCHES

The Epomaker Hack 59 does not have any other color option than black but you can choose the switches pre-assembled from factory.

The switches options include 2 linear switches from the Epomaker brand:

• Epomaker Wisteria
• Epomaker Flamingo

The unit that we are reviewing was equipped with Wisteria switches, which is the switch model that we have seen and tested more often among all keyboards from Epomaker.

These switches are well-tuned to perform smoothly while covering all type of tasks with the same level of efficiency – and provide with qualities such as a balanced force/travel and scratchless response.

Worth to mention that, tactile and clicky switches are not offered as a choice of pre-assembled models with this keyboard.

CONNECTIVITY

The keyboard can be used wired or wirelessly, with a detachable USB-C connection for its wired mode (and charging) and 2 options for its wireless use that include:

• Bluetooth 5.0 with 3 independent pairing slots
• 2,4G through the included wireless bundle

It is worth mentioning that the keyboard can reach as much as 1000Hz of polling rate in its wired mode and 2.4G wireless connection; Bluetooth tops at 125Hz.

Using it as a typing everyday companion, the Epomaker Hack provides a superb switch, sound and stabs performance but the 60% layout and lack of even arrow keys does not make us to pick it as a personal choice for a daily overall driver.

The Epomaker 59 has been clearly design for gaming and productivity and office might not be its strongest asset as the keyboard has even less keys than a typical 60% keyboard which already are way too basic for real-life work and productivity.

If you intend to do more gaming that work or use it as a quick on-the-go companion, the Hack 59 can be an option for your mobile setup.

It is certainly a small and portable keyboard but the lack of some essential keys and no knob might limit the usability as a main keyboard on a mobile system.

The keyboard has south-facing RGB LED lights, yet the non-shine-through keycaps and darker theme might make the RGB effect to be less eye-candy and flashy than other gaming-oriented keyboards.

The Epomaker Hack 59 is without doubt a cheap-priced keyboard but it has proven that in spite the MSRP and plastic build, the company has not cheaped out in the internals of the keyboard.

As a matter of fact, the Hack 59 surprised the team with a fantastic, premium poppy and thocky seasoned sound profile that it is nearly impossible to obtain in a similarly priced, compact keyboard.

Factory lube and assembly of the stabilizers was also much better done than more expensive competitors, presenting rattle free stabs yet not being mushy – pinging and resonance are also absent in the Epomaker Hack 59

Unexpectedly at this price point, this Epomaker keyboard is VIA compatible with full support to make use of the power and freedom of VIA as its reprogram, customization and editing “software” for all features and settings of the keyboard and saving the user customizations in its internal on-board memory.

Unfortunately, the brand has equipped a battery inside the Epomaker Hack 59 that is noticeably smaller than what is typically used in other competing models – with a capacity rating of 3000mAh.
