DESIGN

The EPOMAKER P87 is a mechanical keyboard with a TKL layout but with a slightly tweaked designed that is, more precisely, called 87% due to the amount of keys and the inclusion of a knob.

The finish of the case has a metallic-golden color that resembles very much the gamut used by Apple, though fare to note that this finish and color can easily pickup light sources making it look nearly metallic-white at times – usual tendency of light-colored anodized metal surfaces.

The P87 has a less-flashy nature than many other keyboards with more retro vibe and a muted look; some might find it too dull but there are some embellishing details like an RGB strip light sitting above the arrow keys and a full RGB south-facing backlit board.

To match the aesthetic feel, the keycaps set combine colors such as khaki, beige/cream.

As typically seen with metal keyboards, the EPOMAKER P87 does not offer adjustable feet and can be a bit taller than some thinner, plastic keyboards.

On the rear edge of the case, you will find the connection switch, USB connector and the 2.4G dongle is a dedicated storage slot.

CONSTRUCTION & BUILD

It is hard to deny that the EPOMAKER P87 offers a remarkably rugged build; this is given mainly by the fully aluminum-alloy used for the case with no plastic nor flimsy sections, even the knob is made of metal – the build is somewhat as hefty as what we have seen on the LEOBOG Hi75, Epomaker x FEKER Galaxy 80, CIDOO V68, CIDOO V65, CIDOO V21, YUNZII AL66 and even fairly comparable against some DIY barebone kits like the MonsGeek M6, AKKO SPR75 and EPOMAKER EK75.

The quality build of the P87 is not limited to the exterior as internally, the keyboard sports premium components such as a multi-layer for sound dampening and a more comfortable typing, that includes: Latex Sandwich Pad, IXPE Switch Pad, PET Sound-Enhancement pad, Bottom Sponge, Bottom EVA, plate-mounted stabilizers, polycarbonate plate and a hot-swappable board; all in a gasket-mount design.

As an upper-tier keyboard, the EPOMAKER P87 is thought to be serviceable and modifiable by power-users with much more ease than plastic keyboards; this is mainly provided by a shell that can be opened by removing a couple of screws that can be accessed without struggling (even the hex key comes included with the keyboard)

As we mentioned before, the keycaps might not have the most flashy theme out there but the classic Cherry profile, retro colors and shades combine into a productive and easy to read results given by the contrasty dark fonts over light-colored keycaps.

Moreover, these keycaps have a thick PBT construction quality and a nice, slight gritty finish over them that makes them slippery free with a gentle texture on them.

The knob sitting on the upper right corner responded with precise per-notch tactile but silent feedback to be more accurate than stepless rotary encoders.

A detail about this knob is the fact that it can be removed and replaced by a switch and keycap.

On top of the color options for the EPOMAKER P87, the model can be chosen pre-assembled with 3 different switches:

• Epomaker Zebra linear
• Epomaker Wisteria linear
• Epomaker Wisteria tactile

It is nice seeing that the brand has included the option of tactile switches too; we do not like tactile switches too much but there is still a big piece of the market that loves tactile switches.

The specific variant of the EPOMAKER P87 that we are reviewing came with EPOMAKER Zebra; we have reviewed other keyboards from the brand with this exact same switches and we have always like the bit lighter and faster design over the Epomaker Wisteria.

In spite of this, the Epomaker Zebra are not overly light as to register inputs when resting the fingers over the keycaps; we find the Zebra to offer one of the best force/travel balance to be a perfect all-around linear switch.

A feature that is not very easy to find in metal keyboard is a tri-mode connectivity design as on the EPOMAKER P87.

We are glad that the company did not limit the connection to a wired-only one.

Specifically, the EPOMAKER P87 can be used either wirelessly benefiting from 2 independent connectivity choices (Bluetooth or 2.4G wireless) or wired through its USB-C detachable wire connector.

Fair to note that the connection switch is not well labeled and, thus, requires some guess work or getting the manual to know which position corresponds to each connection mode.

On top of that, this layout is a flawless design to be combined with a dedicated numpad (for example the CIDOO V21 PRO or EPOMAKER EK21)

TABLET/MOBILE

Despite offering Bluetooth connectivity, the Epomaker P87 would not be the first keyboard that we would recommend for users mainly using a mobile setup.

This would be, basically, because of the heavy weight of the keyboard (1.82kg) that would make it significantly more cumbersome to carry around than a low-profile, plastic keyboard.

These LEDs have a noticeably brighter intensity that also benefits from the metal anodized finish of the case to become more visible and efficient than dark, plastic keyboards.

The sound profile of the EPOMAKER P87 could be defined as a somewhat in-between of a clicky/clacky and poppy style but with a refined quality feel to them.

As a point of reference, we can say that the sound is more inline with EPOMAKER Tide75 than the thocky LEOBOG Hi75, FEKER Galaxy 80 or the CIDOO V PRO series such as the CIDOO V75 PRO, CIDOO V68, CIDOO V65.

As expected by a keyboard with this level of build and inner components, the EPOMAKER P87 does not show any noise issues such as pinging or resonance.

At the same time, the stabilizers came perfectly pre-lubed from factory, keeping a smooth but responsive performance and no rattling at all – which is something that other similarly priced keyboard from AKKO usually do not nail (like the AKKO MU01, AKKO MU02, AKKO MOD007B HE PC, AKKO MOD007 Anniversary, Akko Sailor Moon Crystal 5087B v2)

As the EPOMAKER P87 is a QMK keyboard, it can be programmed and customized through VIA, thus no software needs to be installed nor running in the background of your PC.
