Ajazz has been granting unmatchable bang for buck with their AK820 series of mechanical keyboards. In fact, we have reviewed most of Ajazz AK820 models and all of them offered surprisingly value for money – like the Ajazz AK820 Pro, Ajazz AK820 Max.

The Ajazz AK820 MAX HE is joining the series with an unique innovation to them by including magnetic switches from factory.

The AK820 series have very similar names but you should not mistake the Ajazz AK820 MAX HE vs Ajazz AK820 MAX, as the “HE” is the only with hall-effect switches.

The AJAZZ AK820 MAX HE, comes in the typical, very simple box of all other Ajazz keyboards that we have reviewed.

You will not get the packaging quality of something like the AKKO SPR75 or CIDOO V68, CIDOO V75 PRO, CIDOO V65 but it will suffice for normal shipping abuse.

Inside you will get:
• Keycap/switch puller
• USB cable
• Keyboard dust cover

Unfortunately you will not get any additional magnetic switches with the unit.

DESIGN

The Ajazz AK820 MAX HE is a 75% keyboard with hall-effect switches that has inherited design elements from other keyboards of the AK820 line.

The case of the Ajazz AK820 MAX HE is nearly the exact same of the Ajazz AK820 Max, with rounded corners and a bit larger “bezels” than usual.

As seen on other Ajazz keyboards, the AK820 MAX HE is equipped with 3 LED status indicators, vertically aligned on the right end of the case; these inform battery charge status, Caps lock and Win lock with plenty of brightness.

The upper right corner holds a knob and a display screen; yet it is highly important to mention that the Ajazz AK820 MAX HE exists in 2 versions:

• Triple mode (model being reviewed)
• Wired only

The triple-mode variant is the only one that includes a LCD screen but the wired-only model is the only one that is able to offer 8000Hz of polling rate; so you should choose your model wisely according to your needs.

Both variants of the AJAZZ AK820 MAX HE are available in 2 different colors:

• AJAZZ AK820 MAX HE black
• AJAZZ AK820 MAX HE white

DISPLAY SCREEN

The screen of the AJAZZ AK820 MAX is one of the smallest that we have seen on all the keyboards reviewed so far (0.85 inches), yet the display is significantly better than others (like the CIDOO V68, FANTECH MAXFIT81 Vibe Edition), where the information is clear to see and identify – with only the exception over the date that uses very small fonts.

The screen will display: date, time, battery status, Win lock, Caps Lock, BT slot, CPU thermals, CPU %, connection mode and animated GIF.

On top of that, the display includes a built-in menu to take full control of the RGB backlighting, allowing users to choose the preset, speed, brightness.

To access the CPU readings you need Ajazz software to be opened and running on your PC.

CONSTRUCTION & BUILD

The case of the Ajazz AK820 MAX HE is made of plastic, allowing sufficient toughness while keeping the weight under control.

Internally, the keyboard is equipped with a south-facing, hot-swappable board compatible with magnetic switches from Ajazz, Kailh and Gateron and a triple layer of dampening material with a gasket mounted design.

Unlike other plastic keyboards, this AK820 model carries inside an aluminum plate and plate-mounted stabilizers.

KEYCAPS

Despite having inherited the case of the Ajazz AK820 Max, the keycaps set is not the same as on the AK820 Max, instead the keycaps have been inherited from the Ajazz AK820 Pro, with its greyscale color and yellow accents on ESC, spacebar and Enter.

The keycaps have excellent build quality thanks to their PBT construction material, ensuring long-time resistance to oily fingers and never fading away.

The keycaps have Cherry profile with a subtle grit that makes them smooth to the touch, yet granting zero issues with slippery keys.

The knob acts also as a programmable button when pressed and responds with tactile but silent feedback per notch.

SWITCHES

As a well-designed hall-effect switch, these Ajazz magnetic switches come pre-lubed from factory and have absolutely zero scratchiness; unlike classic mechanical switches.

If you are new to hall-effect/magnetic switches, this Ajazz switches enable users to customize and adjust the actuation point of each switch, independently; this gives them the possibility to become nearly any linear switch style on the market, from insanely fast linear switches for competitive gaming, up to relaxed actuation for casual typing – and everything else that you can imagine.

The actuation point of the switches in the AJAZZ AK820 MAX HE can be adjusted from 0.1mm up to 4mm (in 0.1mm steps) and even enabling to set the press actuation distance and release actuation distance independently from each other.

In addition to all this, the Ajazz magnetic switches enable advanced tuning and unmatchable gaming specs like:

• Rapid trigger
• Dead zone adjustment
• DKS (Dynamic Keystroke) – with up to 4 functions in a single full key press and release
• MT (Mod-Tap)
• TGL (Toggle-Key)

The Ajazz magnetic switches pre-assembled in the AJAZZ AK820 MAX HE have a noticeably heavier actuation force than many popular mechanical linear switches. This, though, is not excessively heavy as to become fatiguing nor interfering with the normal typing feel of a upper-tier, heavier mechanical switch.

As a matter of fact, its heavier nature allows a finer control of features like Dynamic Keystroke.

CONNECTIVITY

The Ajazz AK820 MAX HE has a tri-mode connectivity design which enables it to be used wired (USB-C detachable cable) or set the keyboard in any of the 2 wireless modes (Bluetooth or 2.4G wireless)

In total, users can connect the keyboard with up to 5 different devices thanks to 3 slots in BT mode combined with the wired and 2.4G mode.

We have mentioned this already but, the wired-only variant can reach 8000Hz of polling rate (no wireless modes, display nor battery included) while the tri-mode variant can reach up to 1000Hz of polling rate.

SOUND

Hall-effect/magnetic switches are not famous for thocky sound and, indeed, the switches on the Ajazz AK820 MAX HE do not offer thock. Instead, the AK820 MAX HE presents a clack bounce back sound at the end of the release of the key/switch press that become louder the harder/faster you release/hit them and quieter if you type in a less smashing way.

In fact, if the switches are gently pressed and accompanied through the final release, they will respond with the same sound profile of a silent switch – typing style that matches well the Sensitive Mode preset.

In comparison with other hall-effect keyboards from Akko (Akko MOD 007 PC 7th Anniversary, Akko MOD007B HE PC Tokyo), the Ajazz exhibits perfectly pre-lubed plate-mounted stabilizers that never show traces of rattling nor being over-lubed as to become mushy.

SOFTWARE

The Ajazz AK820 MAX HE is one of the few that finally makes use of a single software HUB for multiple Ajazz keyboard models.

This is a great upgrade since nearly all other Ajazz keyboards need an independent software to be installed for each keyboard model that you have (something seen on many other brands, like LEOBOG, Skyloong and some Epomaker models)

The software itself is based on the same core used on many Chinese keyboards; in fact, the software is highly similar to what we have seen on AKKO HE keyboards and others. Full customization, programming, layers, screen editing, lighting and even magnetic switches parameters and features are freely accessible.

A note, though, the brand lists CPU readings available through the LCD screen when the PC software is running but we were never able to get them working.

BATTERY

The keyboards comes with a slightly larger than average battery with a capacity of 4000mAh.

This provides longer usable time before needing to re-plug the keyboard to be charged.
