The OLLO HPS S4R is a handmade, over-ear headphone made in Slovenia by OLLO Audio, that is offered as a studio recording headphone for musicians and audio artists.
OLLO Audio designed the OLLO HPS S4R as a headphone capable of isolating from the environment while being able to preserve a balanced and full sound reproduction.
In fact, isolation and faithful reproduction were the main motivations and pursuit of the creator of OLLO Audio when deciding to fund the brand and hand-build a headphone that was adapted for this use and capable of fulfilling his recording needs.
For mixing, the brand has another dedicated model called OLLO HPS S4 (similar name to the model being reviewed but without the “R” at the end).

The OLLO HPS S4R comes with a black soft pouch for carrying the unit, a 1/4” to 3.5mm adapter and a detachable cable.
Additionally, the brand includes a measurement sheet of the specific unit bought with a quality control check.
The headphone comes packed inside a simple and small square box. Inside, the unit is wrapped with recyclable paper.

The OLLO HPS S4R comes with a detachable Y cable with dual mono 2.5mm jacks.
The cable itself is build with 2 materials; the section before the cable bifurcation is braided while the other end is rubberized.
Both the 2.5mm and 3.5mm jacks have a main metal construction and straight shaped connectors.

Construction Quality and Build
Right out of the box, the OLLO HPS S4R feels very rugged and well-built with a combination of heavy-duty metal and Walnut wood.
In fact, users will not find any flimsy plastics or wobbly parts on this headphone.
The headband’s main structure is made of dual metal rods while the supporting section has a self-adjusting, PU leather “band”.
As expected with such a solid build, the unit is heavier than many popular Sennheiser, BOSE and AKG headphones.

Bass & Sub Bass
The OLLO HPS S4R has a confident bass response with energetic mid-bass punch and a full sound.
Sub-bass can get as deep as required by most tracks and genres but will not be as sub-bass centered as to cover intense EDM tracks.
This, though, will be a great quality that grants a less “bass-drowning” sound signature than most commercial headphones on the market, yet without sounding thin nor lacking fun and fullness.
Applying an extreme EQ the S4R revealed groundbreaking deepening of their sub-bass with even mildly ear-rattling sub-bass notes.

Mids & Vocals
The OLLO HPS S4R mids are very warm overall with, also, relaxed male vocals. Their lower midrange end will welcome listeners with a laid back, cozy and intimate feel.
Moreover, the upper mids are less “relaxed” but not harsh nor annoying, adding nice crispness and a pleasant reproduction of female vocals.
Mid-bass bleed can be perceived, which can add a slight layer of congestion to their lower mids but is primarily present when tracks have a mid and upper bass heavy presence.
With an EQ, the midrange of the OLLO HPS S4R can be drastically retuned with jaw dropping refinement and cleaning up of their OTB sound.
Mid-bass bleed can be nearly annihilated while male and female vocals will gain a much more alive and clear sound – if higher mids are not boosted with an EQ, harshness will not be introduced.

Highs & Treble
Highs of the OLLO HPS S4R can resolve sufficient detail and are able to provide a nice brightness-smoothness balance.
The tuning of their highs follows a coherent sound style with their midrange, exhibiting a friendly and non-aggressive personality but not becoming muddy, recessed nor being incapable of resolving detail.
Regarding fatiguing peaks, the S4R’s piercing highs (as well as sibilance) are mostly absent or tolerably mild on most tracks.
Exactly like seen with the EQ on their mids; their highs showed a radical response, with major sound retuning.
Applying an EQ aimed to boost the frequencies from 7000Hz onward, will make the OLLO HPS S4R reveal their true detail retrieval potential and will, also, unleash a miles more open sound without excessively empowering any of the fatiguing peaks.

Sound Leak
The sound leaking out of the OLLO HPS S4R is somewhat hearable at low volume settings and substantially when the volume is dialed up.
In general, the leakage levels are more or less inline with many average closed headphones.

Sound Isolation
The sound isolation provided by the OLLO HPS S4R is very efficient and much stronger than most normal headphones.
The passive isolation will be felt right away when putting them on, allowing to reach absolute isolation when cranking up the volume just a bit above moderate.

Comfort
The OLLO HPS S4R has an excellent size for an over-ear headphone, being able to remain fairly small but still sporting 90mm earpads. Indeed, the outer cups have this diameter while the inner one is 70 mm, allowing a comfortable fit of most ear sizes.
The foam used for the cups is soft and is part of the acoustic insulation system of the headphone with an artificial leather finish. In addition to this, the cups can be slightly tilted and, also, rotate freely on both directions adding a better placement on each user’s head – also, the rotational movement allows the headphone to lay fully flat to transport it.
The self-adjusting headband used on the OLLO HPS S4R follows a long-proven design for comfort that has been seen similarly applied to AKG headphones. Moreover, this kind of headbands can be easily adapted to any head’s size.
The widest section of the soft supporting headband is nearly 60 mm in width, allowing a large area to distribute the weight when sitting on the top head. In fact, one of our editors suffers from chronic hyper-sensibility of the top head’s muscles which brings headaches when wearing any full sized headphones but with the OLLO HPS S4R he did not get any fatigue of the upper head’s muscles.

Response to Equalization
The OLLO S4R showed extraordinary retuning potential due to a highly efficient response to EQ that can either unleash a remarkably deep sub-bass or clean up and refine their mids, vocals, treble and highs without adding any cons.
