? COUMI is a brand that we had never heard before getting to know the COUMI ANC-860.

This TWS offers some advanced features such as touch controls, active noise cancelling, ambient mode and a very high waterproof rating (IPX7)

Inside each earpiece, the ANC-860 holds a 3.7V 60mAh battery with a rated battery life of 7.5 hours while the charging case adds up OTG full charges to achieve a total of 41 hours of music listening – the case itself holds a 720mAh battery.

We will find out the performance of this earphone and evaluate if it sits among the standards of other modern TWS.

Bass & Sub Bass

The COUMI ANC-860 bass is strongly punchy and boosted with a pumping effect that can add fun to any track.

Nonetheless, this is a mid-bass centered earphone with a tuning balanced towards a more intense mid and upper bass than sub-bass.

For most modern pop tracks their sub-bass will be more than enough but it could lack the deepness and extension needed for music genres that mainly centered in the sub-bass ranges.

An EQ can help out to squeeze some extra deepness to it’s sub-bass while users can, as well, opt to boost their mid-bass punch with very noticeable results.

When activating it’s ANC function, the bass of the COUMI ANC-860 was noticeably boosted with up to a maximum of +7dB of boosting.

Mids & Vocals

Mids of the COUMI ANC-860 are very warm and cozy but exhibit a congested sound profile.

Lower mids suffer from mid-bass bleed, adding a busy sensation to their male vocals and low midrange; yet, male vocals do not sound distant nor laid back.

Upper mids and female vocals sound are free of any harshness issues or annoying spikes but could sound a bit too conservative for many users.

Technically speaking, the COUMI ANC-860 has a very flat response over their mid and upper midrange but, unfortunately, will sound busy and a bit dull without an EQ.

With an EQ, a bit more sparkling and alive feel can be added to the midrange of the COUMI but can tend to become boxy if overdone.

Highs & Treble

The COUMI ANC-860 has dark highs with little to no detail retrieval.

On the other hand, this TWS is a smooth sounding earphone regarding fatiguing peaks such as sibilance and piercing highs where we could hardly see or perceive any disturbing spike.

Despite the lack of brightness, the COUMI ANC-860 does not sound overly muddy and can be easily appreciated by users who prefer a non-disturbing sound over a bright and sibilant/piercing sound.

This highs tuning will provide users the capability of enjoying longer casual listening sessions without fatigue.

An EQ, can brighten up the sound profile of the ANC-860 but do expect some fatiguing peaks to show up.

Sound Isolation

The The COUMI ANC-860 might look like an in-ear headphone but beneath the eartips, there is an earbud kind of design.

Design-wise any earbud will have a less-capable passive isolation than an in-ear earphone; nonetheless, the brand has added Active Noise Cancelling technology to improve the capability of the ANC-860.

In total, this TWS offers 3 modes: Noise Cancelling (to actively cancel noises), Normal mode (normal earphone mode without any active cancelling) and Ambien noise (a mode that enhances the noises of the environment to get a safe perception of your surroundings)

During our tests and measurements, the COUMI ANC-860 exhibited a very efficient noise cancelling performance over constant pitched noises such as fans, in-cabin noises, etc. that significantly transformed their low passive-isolating into a noticeable cancellation of these noises.

On the other hand, other noises such as people talking, higher pitched noises or keystrokes where not as efficiently cancelled – it is fair to note that this is the normal way modern ANC tech works and not a specific issue of this COUMI TWS; yet the ANC-860 showed a lower efficiency to cancel these aforementioned noise ranges, than many industry-leading ANC models on the market.

Unfortunately, we noticed that the Ambient Mode added a weird “reverby” effect to the ambient sounds perceived.

Comfort

The COUMI ANC-860 certainly do not have a standard design with an elongated oval-shaped main housing and a protruding 2-section in-ear end – yet the slim profile might be a promising feature comfort-wise.

The unusual form factor of this COUMI TWS might look less traditional but on practical use, this earphone fits and feels much more comfortable than many other true wireless earbuds on the market.  The brand has implemented a responsive touch control system that never misses any command.

In addition to this, the COUMI ANC-860 has touch responsive volume controls to dial it up/down by simple tap – a feature that, inexplicably, many TWS still do not include.

Response to Equalization
