We are reviewing the ELEGOO PHECDA PRO, the first laser engraving/cutting machine from ELEGOO.

ELEGOO is better known for their excellent 3D FDM printers and 3D Resin printers, yet this time the brand has entered the market of laser engravers and laser cutters with their much anticipated and successful crowdfunding of the ELEGOO PHECDA, that got fully backed, pledging nearly $3-millon.

The ELEGOO PHECDA got introduced as an affordable, yet competitive alternative to laser engravers and laser cutters with 3 to 5 times the retail price of the PHECDA.

In the past we have reviewed 3D printers from ELEGOO, which proved to offer an outstanding value for money and performance, we will see how the ELEGOO PHECDA PRO performs during our review and evaluate if it is able to keep up with the high-quality standards of the brand.

The ELEGOO PHECDA PRO comes inside a large square box with all assembly pieces well-protected by a generous amount of foam.

Inside you will get:

It is nice seeing the attention to detail by little things such as including a couple of sample materials to engrave/cut right out of the box and even more the fact that the air assist compressor comes included with the basic package and not as a paid addon.

ASSEMBLY

Overall, it took our team 30 minutes to fully assemble and get the ELEGOO PHECDA PRO up and running but it is fair to highlight that it required more assembly steps than other laser machines that we have tested – our advice, if you have a good ratchet kit, grab it and you will ease up the assembly process.

Out of all, the x-axis section was the less user-friendly to assemble and align but all pre-assembled screws on all sections were tightened correctly without any adjustment needed – unlike the IKIER K1 PRO MAX that costs 4 times more than the ELEGOO PHECDA PRO and needed most screws to be adjusted properly.

It is fair to note that the main frame has to be put together by the user and this has the potential risk of misalignment by the user-error; therefore, take your time to carefully assemble the main frame and sections to avoid any performance issues afterwards.

An instruction video is included in the microSD card bundled with the machine, providing a well-detailed and easy to follow step by step assembly process.

The brand includes spare screws in case you lose a couple while assembling the engraver.

DESIGN

The ELEGOO PHECDA PRO has an adjustable laser head height from 0 to 75mm accommodating the 20W laser module that operates at 455nm (blue laser wavelength) and offering a focal spot of 0.07mmx0.13mm.

The ELEGOO PHECDA PRO has the form factor of most mid/large-capacity laser machines with a rectangular frame and offering a working area of 400x400mm/15.75×15.75 inches. Yet, despite the same engraving area of competitors, the ELEGOO is a bit smaller than many others, measuring 673mmx660mmx190mm.

On the top section of the front main frame, you will find a display screen while the right section of the frame carries all connectors (power, USB and microSD card reader) and the power switch.

The ELEGOO PHECDA has a more stylish and less-industrial look than other laser machines, with a very nice space grey metallized finish that matches the general aesthetics of ELEGOO 3D printers and resin printers, giving a coherently-matching aesthetic of the ELEGOO brand and ecosystem.

The machine has a modular laser head with a quick release system that allow it to be removed and adjusted or even replaced if you want to swap between the 10W and 20W modules or, possibly, any upcoming module heads from ELEGOO.

Besides the bundled goggles, the ELEGOO PHECDA has 2 shading plates; one is a shorter one that is fixed to the rear section of the x-axis while a much taller one is placed on the front of the x-axis with a magnetic attaching system that permits the access to the laser module and adjusting the height and focus elements with ease.

DISPLAY SCREEN

A color, touch-sensitive display screen is found on the front panel of the ELEGOO PHECDA; as seen on other machines from ELEGOO, the screen is intuitive, responsive and provides access to useful functions such as:

– X-axis control
– Y-axis control
– Origin set
– Axis speed
– Live coordinates
– Laser adjustment
– Info and Wi-Fi
– Card files access for engraving

The display screen does not only add a layer of friendliness to the utilization of the laser machine but also enhances advanced controls like live adjustment of power and speed while engraving to provide a fine control and modification of an specific part being engraved/cut.

A personal preference, we would had loved to see the touch screen to be placed on the front section of the front panel instead of being on the top area but you might love it as it is, depending if you tend to work at eye level or from the top.

CONSTRUCTION & BUILD

Once you fully assemble the ELEGOO PHECDA you will notice that the machine provides a rugged and well put-together build that shows no traces of wobbly nor rattling sections.

Despite the solid build, the use of aluminum alloy for the frame and sections of the ELEGOO PHECDA PRO allows it to become a remarkably light-weighted laser machine. In fact, with a mere total weight of 6.7kg, the ELEGOO PHECDA PRO is nearly half as heavy than other 20W laser machines.

The laser machine is equipped with high-quality construction materials and pieces such as a satellite orbit laser module with a dual fans system to keep thermals under control and a X/Y axis with a multi POM V-wheel design for fast, quiet and accurate axis and laser movement.

OPERATION & CONTROL

The ELEGOO PHECDA PRO can be used and controlled by an USB cable connection or wirelessly through a WiFi connection.

The wired connection allows the ELEGOO to be fully controlled with a connected PC and any compatible laser software.

Wirelessly, you can connect and control the machine by sending files to be printed from your PC or through their branded mobile app.

Unlike what happens with the apps from many laser machines, the ELEGOO PHECDA PRO has a truly functional smartphone/mobile app that allows the creation of engravings of photos, text, free drawing, bar code creation and QR code creation. All of these are right available from your phone and connected with the PHECDA through a direct WiFi connection bridge among the 2 devices. Moreover, a “material library” comes included in the app with 9 pre-created designs to engrave right away.

The app is, actually, quite powerful as it includes a vast array of materials presets and fine tuning manual adjustment sliders to optimize your final engraving/cutting results. Among the settings that you are able to access you will find:

– Brightness

– 4 types presets
– Power control

– 9 material presets with tuned settings from factory
– File naming
– Size & Resizing

Laser engravers keep getting more powerful and with it you should keep your eye on your laser machine and do not leave it unattended while working.

To reduce the normal risks of laser machines, the ELEGOO PHECDA PRO comes equipped with auxiliary safety sensors including:

– Smoke filtration system

The smoke filtration system works with a 3 fans design and a dedicated filter cartridge that takes care of exhausting the fumes and dust residues from engraving – the cartridge filters are user-replaceable.

Being available as either 10W (ELEGOO PHECDA) or a 20W laser machine (ELEGOO PHECDA PRO), the Phecda gives possible owners the chance to decide if wanting to prioritize a more affordable engraving model with a smaller laser spot or a more powerful variant with a deeper engraving and cutting capability.

By specs, the 20W laser is capable of cutting up to 14mm of basswood or 0mm to 14mm engraving depth without issues.

PERFORMANCE

The ELEGOO PHECDA presented a way quieter operation than other laser and 3D printers, with lower dB output coming from the motors, axis, rods, mechanical moving parts and also from the air compressor.

The ELEGOO PHECDA PRO is advertised as a more user-friendly laser machine and we have to admit that the overall experience did, effectively, confirmed that this laser machine will be easier to use right away by users with little experience with engraving lasers than other pro-grade alternatives.

The more pen-alike laser head gave the ELEGOO PHECDA PRO a vast advantage over many competitors with flat laser ends, allowing the PHECDA to reach smaller and deeper engraving materials that would had been impossible to engrave with the other laser machines.

The ELEGOO PHECDA PRO does not have fancy autofocus sensors but uses an effective and always accurate focal positioning metal bar that you manually “open” to adjust the correct focus and then close – this system in real-life is risk-free and even smarter than “smart” autofocus sensors that tend to get confused and even fully fail to focus with light-colored, mirror or bland objects.

Besides the strong 20W laser, the x-axis is able to move the laser module as fast 25000mm/m while the y-axis can travel at up to 18000mm/m, thus the laser machine was able to complete the engraving and cutting tests applied throughout our review at a faster pace than other laser machines.

Moreover, the air compressor and fumes exhaust assist system did a good job clearing up the engraving/cutting spots.

We ran the ELEGOO PHECDA PRO on real life engraving and cutting scenarios to see how the machine was able to perform.

ENGRAVING

STAINLESS STEEL

By varying the speed/power combinations and analyzing the results through material testing engravings, the Phecda Pro was able to obtain multi-colored engraving over stainless steel sheets.

ACRYLIC

Acrylic engraving with the ELEGOO PHECDA Pro responded with outstanding final results that were easy to achieve and set with either the mobile app or any of the compatible PC laser programs.

The acrylic engravings presented both fine, small details and larger, bold images/fonts that were faithful reproductions of the original designs.

ALUMINUM

Aluminum was smoothly engraved by the 20W of the ELEGOO Phecda, allowing a “greyscale” gradient to choose according to power/speed and to use as a creative element to create more complex engravings.

WOOD

The 20W of the ELEGOO PHECDA PRO were never challenged by any engraving tasks on wood with quick and defined results and easy achievability of gradients – of course, preparing the files and configuring the best speed/power settings correctly are the main keys here.

PAINTED METAL

Engraving painted metal had instant and highly detailed results with the Phecda, taking a short time to complete the task.

STONE

Engraving and carving on stone was not a difficult task for the ELEGOO PHECDA, obviously the depth and settings needed to carry on the tasks were highly dependent on the type and hardness of the stone being used.

CERAMICS

Engraving and carving of ceramics was a fast and easy to achieve process for the ELEGOO laser, without requiring slow speeds and long runtimes.

GLASS & MIRRORS, CARTON

Glass and mirror engraving was fast and easy to complete with the Phecda. We do recommend to invest buying the rotary addon if you want to expand the glass engraving potential.

LEATHER

Engraving leather was no challenge for the Phecda, with instant results and lightning fast engraving speeds and sharp definition.

CUTTING

WOOD

Thin wood pieces were cut within fair times and with clean results while getting near the 1.5cm of wood thickness required some longer runtime and more patience (depending on the dimensions of the cutting work)

LEATHER

Average-thick leather was easily cut by the ELEGOO PHECDA PRO on a single pass.
