The Gravastar Mars Pro holds inside a dual driver configuration with a front 70mm dynamic driver and a rear bass radiator.

Gravastar is a young company that went all-in with the creation of the Gravastar Mars series.

In fact, the Gravastar Mars Pro was released as a funding campaign in Indiegogo, reaching 50 times the funding goal and raising nearly half-million dollars.

It is nice seeing young companies innovating on the market, creating original and well-manufactured products instead of the same “Copy/Paste” mass-production.

The Gravastar Mars Pro comes inside square packaging with a futuristic-silver color.

Inside, the unit comes very well protected by a bottom and a top polystyrene cap that sport the Mars Pro shape engraved on them.

The device comes bundled with 1x USB-C to USB-A charging cable and 1x USB-C to 3.5mm audio cable.

Design

The Gravastar Mars Pro has a gorgeous design with an unique sci-fi inspired aesthetic.

The speaker has an spheric spaceship/robot alike design that looks like a war spaceship that landed on your desktop out directly from a movie.

If you get it in the special edition War-Damaged (yellow), the speaker will get a hand-made paint detailing that exhibits even more the beauty of this speaker.

The speaker makes use of a triangular support design; these legs of the speaker can be folded independently in 3 different position, allowing it to stand straight or tilted according to the legs folding combination.

The unit has not a single visible connector that could break the aesthetical perfection of the speaker, instead, the brand placed the USB-C connector on the bottom of the body, which acts as a charging connector and as an audio connector (if connected with the bundled USB to 3.5mm stereo)

You can feel that a lot of effort and dedication has been put in designing and building the Gravastar Mars Pro.

In addition to this, the Mars Pro has perfectly placed LED lighting details across different sections of the speaker, including: 1 strip on each leg, 10 front lateral strips, 2 small strips on the edges of the bass radiator frame, white LEDs beneath the volume slider, 2 strips on the front of the driver and an internal illumination over the driver itself. The smaller strips around the bass radiator inform the status of the Bluetooth connection and the battery charge.

The color of the lights can be changed with a dedicated button, allowing to choose among 6 different colors.

Construction Quality and Build

With a modern world building everything in plastic and many times cheap plastic, the Gravastar Mars Pro will greet users with an extremely rugged construction in a nearly all-metal build throughout the entire body and details of the speaker – the bottom middle half in deep grey color is the only section made of plastic.

As soon as you hold the speaker on your hands you have a satisfying feel of a premium built product and not a disposable cheapo.

In fact, the unit uses a rugged zinc alloy construction material.

The main spheric body of the Mars Pro has a diameter of 5.5″, while the speaker has an overall dimension of 7.5″ x 7.1″ x 7.9″.

By being a mainly metal constructed device, this speaker will be heavier than plastic speakers – the precise weight of the Gravastar Mars Pro is 5.55 lbs.

Operation & Control

The top and back of the speaker holds all the buttons to control the device.

A touch sensitive volume slider with white backlights is found on the very top of the spherical body; the lights inform the volume level set.

Moreover, the speaker is equipped with 3 physical buttons placed right above the frame of the passive bass radiator; as the speaker driver is placed on the front, the buttons would had been better to be placed on the front of the speaker instead of on the rear section.

These buttons can control:

• Play/Pause
• Light modes and colors
• Bluetooth connection and TWS function

We noticed that through Bluetooth and Windows, sometimes the volume slider became a bit unresponsive, also the volume level control is set at 13 steps

Battery Life

Inside, the speaker holds 4 big 2000mAh batteries that can provide up to 15 hours of continuous playback.

The battery runtime might not win an award for the longest lasting one but falls within a normal average of many modern Bluetooth speakers.

The brand recommends to charge the battery with a charger capable of providing 5V 2A.

Additionally, users can buy a very nice charging base that matches the cool sci-fi themes design and provides a seamless and smooth charging system.

Sound

The Gravastar Mars Pro might not have the typical looks of an audiophile speaker but does offer some features and inner guts from them.

Among these features there is a solid zinc alloy body that helps the acoustic design and audio resonation on the sound chamber and a 4-way DSP digital crossover that handles bass, midrange and highs compensating and tuning them to offer a clear, balanced and precise reproduction.

In addition to this, the speaker uses a dual driver configuration with a main dynamic driver to take care of sound reproduction and a rear bass radiator to enhance lower frequencies and provide a palpable shaking bass.

Moreover, the legs of the Gravastar Mars Pro can be set to 3 different positions. Whether if this legs design also got audiophiles in mind or not; the extended position will make the speaker to sit on the pointy end of the legs replicating the design of speakers spikes used on professional and audio-enthusiast floorstanding speakers and studio monitors – the speakers spikes are used in the professional audio world to separate and isolate the base of the speaker from the surface where it is standing, thus dissipating the vibrations generated on the cabinet/body of the speaker.

While testing the Gravastar Mars Pro, we were surprise of its huge output power despite the fair mid-size.

It is important to note that the speaker has a front facing driver and a rear facing passive bass radiator. This means that to obtain the best audio quality out of the Gravastar Mars Pro, you need to place the speaker facing as frontally to you as you can.

The speakers showed a very rich and warm sound signature with a midrange that exhibited full bodied vocals and an cozy feel to them.

On top of that, the speaker was able to provide a massive bass response with pumping punch and a bass rumble that can even be physically felt by touching the unit – if you set the feet to the fully folded position, the bass rumble will be transmitted to the desktop.

At the same time, the agreeable midrange of the Gravastar Mars Pro did not show any traces of harshness nor highs with fatiguing peaks.

Audiophiles looking for a studio monitor with crystal clear midrange and analytical, bright highs might not have the perfect match here but the overall relaxed mid and upper range combined with an punchy bass response will make happy most users to perfectly match both fun listening sessions, movies and gaming.

Stereo Mode (TWS)

Similar to other speakers that we have reviewed like the 1MORE Speaker, EarFun UBOOM and Tronsmart Bang, the Gravastar Mars Pro can be used in a stereo TWS mode by connecting wirelessly 2 Mars Pro speakers.

Connectivity

The Mars Pro can be used wired or wirelessly through its Bluetooth 5.0 connection.

Response to EQ

The speaker showed a strong retuning potential by applying different fine-tailored equalization.

Bass could be boosted exponentially by an EQ focused on mid and sub bass while a different EQ path allowed both mids and highs be significantly cleaned up and “opened up” without introducing boxy mids, harshness nor sibilance.
